Unit 1
Proof of concept 1
How does it reflect the theme of contrast?
The theme of contrast is reflected by using a character who is lost and confused as well as being a new students they are unsure of the campus and where everything is in the campus showing the vulnerable state that the student is in and how this situation makes the student innocent as they are left in the dark and in a situation they have no control over and can make someone feel scared or worried compared to the monsters and creatures who know the place well as suggested by the short extract as they are able to find corners and dark areas to hide to sneak up on the student as well as contrasting to the students innocence by being portrayed as evil and having bad intentions towards the student displayed by the fear from the student and how they are sneaking around and not letting the student know of their presence.
How does it include German Expressionist conventions?
The use of creatures that look mythical and fantastical apply to the conventions of German expressionism as there are elements in this media that are very fantastical and mythical and an important part of this point is that none of the strange things are never explained in terms of why its there as indicated by our short video and this portrays ambiguous meanings and points and in the situation in the video it expresses the fear of the student and the extremity of the situation the student finds themselves in with the supported point of the viewer knowing this would never happen in a rational situation which is a something that commonly happens in German expressionism media to open up multiple ideas of what things can represent and mean.
The scenes in the short video features a very strong black and white colour scheme with very dark shades of colours with the main focus being on the dark colours as shown by the character wearing black and white items of clothing and darker shades of colour used in the backgrounds of the video and as well as this the lighting is very minimal and in some cases it is pitch black strengthening the very dark overall scheme of the video.
I have learnt how to use the camera and lighting equipment and how to set everything up as well as put everything away as well as safety setting up a set to protect the crew and actors as well as the equipment itself. I have also learnt alongside this how to use the equipment effectively to achieve a certain look for a shot by positioning the camera in a certain place and opening up the reflective flaps on the LEDs a certain amount and putting it at a certain angle and turning the dials at the right time.
I also learned how to coordinate and work within a team using the equipment to create certain shots that need executing according to a storyboard that was planned out before hand with still drawings of the shots we want to achieve and information about little details and how it would fit in the storyline.
Have you been inspired by any aspects of German expressionism to pass onto your assignment?
The mythical and fantastical creatures is an element i would like to use in my assignment as they can come in all sizes and shapes and the sound can be modified to sound higher pitched and lower pitched to suit the media and genre. They can also be modified to look less or more scary and unsettling.
Annotatated scenes
The colours in the image consist of the colours of the American flag with the white gate, red roses and blue sky excluding the stems which are green and is not a colour of the American flag. The flowers itself are framed by the gate or the sky or the wooden plank keeping the gate together with very minor overlaps between the sky and the gate. The flowers are mainly framed by the gate as it is white and has more of a contrasting makes it easier to see the stem as well as the flower. This shot is taken at allow angle so the gate looks like arrows pointing up and to show the stem in more detail as well as tease the idea smaller creatures being involved in the short film.
In this image here the hose is positioned in a phallic manner with the further visual element of the dig driving from the hose adding to the phallic manner of the placement of the hose. He is lying on a wire which has the hidden meaning that his head isn't even on a smooth surface but a single wire which can add to the current danger and suggest he is litterly 'hanging by a thread'. He is also positioned in the middle of a wire square which is giving the illusion that he is trapped in health terms and in the terms that he is in a square unable to move away from the square foreshadowing the immobile state he is in is in the hospital bed. A baby is walking up to him being the only one able to help as he I outside the gates and the house is far away but ultimately he would be unable to as he is a baby who would not know what to do or what has happened for the matter.
The water is very dark and although water is very clear this shot is filmed in a way that the water is dark keeping what is under the water a mystery and also the tall grass or wheat looks very ominous and sinister with the chance that there could easily be someone or something hiding in there and waiting for an opportunity its to harm the swimmer in some way. This is further suggested by using the water as leading lines to direct our eyes to the grass or wheat. Even though this is the focus for us the swimmer is looking directly at the route he needs to continue on implying he is oblivious to all this or there is no harm or danger at all and the route he is focusing on is shown by showing a path with leading lines which is followed by our eyes.
Treatment for concept 1
Concept
The concept for my idea is road signs and specifically the signs are not being followed and the inspiration for this was seeing road signs and being interested by them and the potential situatiations where they can be broken and the consequences of these actions as a result for example if there is a no diving sign and someone dives into it not knowing it is not a deep pool they could break a few bones and have serious injuries to the body possibly being fatal. I am also intrigued with the ambiguous elements of road signs and how the subjects in road signs are just black figures to represent everybody and how the genders are represented in black figures by having a skirt for females and long hair meanwhile males are represented with a figure with no skirt and long hair and how this goes against the message that is spread about all clothes and hair styles being for both genders and blurring the line between what males and females can wear and look like additionally i am interested in the bold and contrasting colours and the science behind how the colour red grabs our attention and holds it while creating a sense of importance and danger towards the person viewing the sign. The shape of the sign is also apart of the message that is presented by the signs by being made into a certain shape to fit the use of the sign and the warning it is trying to give to the viewers.
Themes
The concept reflects the theme of contrast by having an opposition disobeying the road signs contrasting the road sign being placed there to protect and keep people safe with emerging themes of authority being shown by having the signs represent what the government and officials want the people to do for example a police crime scene tape disallows people from crossing the boundary created by the tape and this can be viewed as a way of blocking out the people from knowing any information the crime that has occurred in the location and blocking loved ones out from saying goodbye to victims if the loved ones are fatally effected by the crime. Safety is also a theme mentioned in this concept as some road signs are placed there to simple protect people and keep them safe from harm in terms of avoiding accidents of may scales from being hit by a train to being hit by a car to falling into groundworks to being fatally shocked by electricity.
Style
I want the overall tone to be a very unsettling and foreshadowing of possible later events to create an atmosphere of uncertainty of what will happen and could possibly happen along with emotion of worry and fear for the opposition and their safety. I want the photos to be in this style so they can act as a warning almost of the potential dangers of disobeying road signs. I want the colours to be very bland so the road sign featured in the photo can be the main focus and can be the element that gives the overall theme of the photo by having different figures and words on each sign in each photo to show situations of how multiple road signs messages can be broken and disobeyed. I am going to use leading lines in my photos to direct the focus of the viewer to the subject as the bold colours of the sign will mean that the main focus will already be the sign/signs and i want the secondary focus which is the thing that will be noticed secondly to be the subject going against what the sign is warning people not to do. The background will be very simple and feature very minimal buildings and more sky because the sky has connotations to angels and heaven to suggest the person will fatally effected in situation when the worst consequence can be death and with this i will use the night sky to represent hell and the devil if i want to add mentions of these themes if it apples the situation.
Intended Audience
My intended audience for my photos are young people between the ages of 12-25 with the focus of the age subgroup 12-16 is to scare and let the know how the dangers of not following road signs so when they enter the age subgroup of 16-25 they areaway the the signs are placed there for their own safety and they will be scared of not following road signs and feel that they will be putting themselves in serious danger if they don't follow the road signs and could potentially end up dead or in hospital. if the viewer is in the category of the 16-25 age group the aim is show them the consequence of no following road signs which may sound similar to the goal the 12-16 age group but in this case the result will not inform them of this message for the present unlike the age group 12-16 in which they will be informed for the future. I chose the age range from 12-25 because I believe that from the age of 12 children maybe allowed to grout by themselves and may get bored while out and decide tomes around and get into some trouble meaning that if the goal is met then these kids will know not tube too reckless and be a bit more careful. I chose 25 as the age to stop aiming my content at because at the age of 25 people mature enough to realise that not following road signs is dangerous and they would've grown to of their phase of being reckless and immature additionally at this age they would've learnt how to drive and would own a car and them being aware of different signs and what different signs mean especially when this learnt in your driving test in order to even have a driving licence.
Ethics
When taking photos I will be careful to not get anyone's face in the background and if they end up being in the shot I will ask for their permission to be in the photo if they are available at the time to be asked for permission and they are not in a rush or doing something at the current time. Also any models I use for the photos will be people I know and are happy to be photographed. Another issue I will face is health and safety issues regarding stunts such as jumping into pool and going into live road with real cars and putting the subject in danger and to tackle this issue I will not put the subject in situations where they can be harmed and I will ensure I photograph in places that allow photographs to be taken or example in museums there is a rule which is stated by signs that no photos are to be taken sir need tube carful where I shoot my photos.

This artwork interests me because of the hard hitting addition of Steve jobs making the message Banksy is trying to portray instantly stronger as Steve Jobs was known to be very rich and successful with his business 'Apple' leading to him becoming known by everyone as a result. I like how the message is shown in a way which is so clear with the comparison of Steve jobs to the beat-up bag over his shoulder and the computer he is holding is interesting nod to the present. In faded font there is two words that say free Syria being a little nod the other message Banksy is trying to get across.
I think researching Banksys artwork has supported my idea of rebeling against something and disobeying but in my case I will be showing cases of rebelling against something that has good intentions and meaning making the subject the one in the wrong but in Banksys case he is showing his opinions on thing that are wrong and he is in the right depending on different perspectives but a majority would agree that his artwork is rebelling against things that can be considered 'bad'.
I composed a board of all images of signs I found on google images and Pinterest to put the images in a form in which I can spot patterns in images I like and this will help me decide how to create my photos as I have a broad idea of what colours and compositions I like and also any effect and filters I spotted that I like that I can use in my photos.
I chose this picture to use because I like the framing provided by the subjects arm and head and the door frame and how the door acts as leading lines into the office. Additionally the sign is clearly shown in the photograph and there is a two block composition going on with the door and the rest of the contents.
This photo presents someone drinking water in one of the edit bays next to a sign that says 'Notice no eating and drinking in this area' with a corridor exposed in the photo which is included in the photo to create fear due to the fact he could easily be caught if he misses someone walking closer to the edit block and the fact that the subject is drinking right next to the sign shows he is aware that he is breaking the rules but continues to drink the water without any fear and thought that he is breaking a rule.
This photo is very similar to the third photo and has the same charactaristics but the pose holds a different meaning as in the third photo the meaning is that he is on the phone to someone and is in a relaxed position suggesting he has no intent to move from the spot and he is looking at the floor. This contrasts the the pose in this photograph because in this photo he is not on his phone and appears to be looking at his surrounding suggesting he is waiting for a friend an has been waiting for a few minutes as he has rested himself on the wall in a comfortable position. he is crossing his arms connoting that he is not scared of the consequences and does not care if he is caught.
Edits
This is the unedited photo and as you can see the lights are quite bright and there is an awkward shadow in the top right corner so I attempted to dim the lights and remove or make the shadow less noticeable.
When editing I struggled to remove the shadow and found I could not remove the shadow without drastically changing the photo dramatically and ruining it in the process so I left the shadow and to dim the lights I messed around with hue, saturation, brightness, exposure and contrast and by changing each of these I managed to dim the spotlights just enough after many adjusting.
I was only able to do one edit as I ran out of time and did not have enough time to complete the other 4 edits.
From the feedback I got from my classmates the overall result I got is that I deeply found meanings in signs and composition and lighting of sign photography and the photos were well edited and explained as well as taken with the interest clearly showing but my main criticism was that the information was not presented in a slow manner and was rushed through an people struggled to understand as a result and the research could've been improved as well as more experimentation could've been done.
Resubmission
Frans Lanting
Brassaï has a very moody and expressionist style of photography and and what interested me and drew me to his work is the use of light and how in some of his photos how light is reflected onto different surface floors and how the subject is lit up using different types of lighting for different effects.
Macro photography is something I chose to research because I wanted to explore more ways of photographing objects that are not the conventional longshot and the way macro photography zooms in on an object and blurs the background putting the focus on the main object is intriguing for w and as I am doing signs it would be useful if i decide to take one of my photographs in a macro style to mix up the variety of photography styles.
Portrait photography is something I wanted it research because it is a very versatile style of photograph and can be executed in so many ways depending on the context of the piece and similarly to Macro photography the background can blurred to create extra focus on the subject and to create the illusion of depth for the subject and the backdrop. The way the subjects are photographed is in a way where all of their features are visible to the camera supported by the close-up shot in traditional portrait photography but sometimes the photographer decides to use longer shots to switch up the photograph and show more of the background.
Proof of concept 2
For my proof of concept 2 I want to focus on being fake on social media and focus on a subject who makes their life seem great and makes themselves seem happy on social media but they is very unhappy and their life is very dull.
Social media platforms
Snapchat-Snapchat is an app that fake lifestyles are also encouraged as people share their content to their stories which be viewed as suscriptions if the other person does not follow them back and if they do they appear as circles on an horizontal line on the stories page and people who uses snapchat may feel to create the most exiting stories and only post the exiting moments and also pretending to be upset is a common thing done on snapchat and this makes people who genuinely need someone to talk to and needs help look like they are attention seeking.
Tiktok- Tiktok is a very popular app that is very addictive as the app is designed to keep the viewer hooked onto the app and unlike snapchat and instagram this app features much more relaxed and genuine content with the account owner posting videos of them talking normally and other content that is very exiting and adventurous with this but the problem lies in how toxic people on Tiktok can be and how users can feel pressured to look a certain way or act a certain way to get more views.
Twitter- Twitter is not as popular as the other platforms and is mainly used by gamers and news sharing to share clips of games and talk about topics and share information to the users following sharing a very toxic atmosphere on the app like tiktok and users tend to avoid this app due to to the toxic nature of having many other users say negative things and bash someones opinions that are not a shared option unless it is a controversial topic and the user is in the wrong.
Facebook- Facebooks main audience is older people above the age of 30 and the content on facebook is very tailored to that audience and this app is used by the parents of younger people while the younger people use the other apps listed.
Youtube-Youtube is an online video streaming and sharing application that features vey honest content compared to the other social media apps but still has fake content in the form of vlogs the specifically pick out the good bits and only shot the good bits making the viewers ink that their life is only happiness and adventure and friends but in reality they have very bad days and don't show the bad aspects of their life.
I decided to research this because I wanted to be educated on things that would offend someone regarding their faith and beliefs and any actions that could end up being offensive as well as diet and what people with different faiths are allowed to eat and not eat.
Emily in Paris
Theo Murray
'I’m from France the funniest part of this series is when the French people were speaking in English to each other. That is impossible ...'
Paul Florent
'As a Parisian myself, this kind of movie makes me so embarassed. People : this Paris doesn't exist. Unless you're a millionaire.'
These comments seem to criticize the way Emily and Paris is represented in general and is criticized because of its mostly white cast and offensive stereotypes of the French people.
He's All That
These diagrams show the general statistics of users on Social media and marketers for Brands and the stats below will be based on each social media application individually.
'Then Came You' (2018) is my main influence for this script as it has many similarities such as the protagonist Calvin (Asa Butterfield) being helped by the side character Skye (Maisie Williams) to find happiness and love themselves and they improve their lives as a result. I like the simplicity of the plot but the amount of content you can put into the story due to the plot being simple and the journey can be put into so much detail because there are no side quests and plots that that need to be covered in the script. Also the reader is forced to feel emotions throughout and at the end of the story because they are taken through the journey and see the progress and journey taken by the characters to achieve the goal. I like how in the movie the two characters keep a very friend based friendship and I want to use this relationship between them as friends in my script as it keeps the focus on the journey to happiness and the side plot of them falling in love does not distract the viewer from the main plot. This movie also encouraged me to research Movember and toxic masculinity while additionally using elements from the side character Skye in my character profile with one being how she isn't being controlled by male characters as we see in other tv and film and her personality is very out there supported by her choice of clothes and footwear which is knee-high converses which are very obnoxious and this is matched by her choices of hair varying of many colours and styles. Her clothes are very bright and have very interesting and eye-catching textures with high contrast between the clothing items she wears in a outfit. I will how images below of these clothing items and her outfits in the movie.
Movember is an organisation that was formed in 2003 by Adam Garone, Travis Garone, Luke Slattery and Justin Coghlan and is a charity with the goal of helping men live happier, healthier and longer lives and the headquarters are in Melbourne, Australia. They raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancers. I wanted to mention this because I wanted to stray away from not having the male characters show their feelings because they feel the need to be 'masculine' and 'manly' and if i do include this stereotype in the script I will show the character slowly realise they can show their feelings and emotions without worrying about not being 'masculine' and 'manly'. If it is required I will also mention testicular and prostate cancers to spread the message the charity is trying to spread.

Her Parents don’t reply so she goes upstairs to check and
calls out while walking up the stairs.
JOY:
MUM! DAD!
MUUUMM! DAAADD! IMMM HOME!
JOY reaches the top of the stairs and checks her parents'
office rooms and checks their bedroom and her bedroom and then turns to go
downstairs. JOY walks down the stairs and goes into the kitchen looking for a
snack and finds a post-it-note on the fridge when JOY is about to open it.
The radio plays in the background.
‘Latest news of a break-in at McDonalds and a fire in Kings
Cross primary school leaving 8 children in hospital but we now move onto the
weather for the week…… and this has been DEBBIE WINTERS and now we will move
onto the news’ (O.S.)
JOY turns off the radio and reads the post it note on the
fridge.
‘At work pizza in oven. From MUM AND DAD’
Joy:
(SIGHING)

She aggressively throws the post-it-note in the bin and
heats up the pizza. JOY waits for the pizza to heat up and puts on an episode
of a rom-com TV show and sits down on the sofa to watch it. She checks on the
pizza is ready a few minutes later.

JOY can see the NEIGHBOURS from the big window doors into
the conservatory. She gets up from the sofa and pauses her show and the opens
the backdoor to the garden.
CARL

Janet
Yes come over there’s too much food for the both of us

JANET shouts out and CARL comes running over
CARL

JOY takes the selfie with CARL and JANET in
JOY

don’t want the internet thinking I’m the best chef because I’m not
CARL laughs and JANET and JOY join in
JOY
That’s the one
JANET gets up from the seat
JANET

picture frame on her bedside and dancing but takes a moment before to singingly
force a smile and recording a video of her showing her cozy outfit and after

her phone down with her phone message tone still going off.
