Unit 1

Proof of concept 1

How does it reflect the theme of contrast?

The theme of contrast is reflected by using a character who is lost and confused as well as being a new students they are unsure of the campus and where everything is in the campus showing the vulnerable state that the student is in and how this situation makes the student innocent as they are left in the dark and in a situation they have no control over and can make someone feel scared or worried compared to the monsters and creatures who know the place well as suggested by the short extract as they are able to find corners and dark areas to hide to sneak up on the student as well as contrasting to the students innocence by being portrayed as evil and having bad intentions towards the student displayed by the fear from the student and how they are sneaking around and not letting the student know of their presence.

How does it include German Expressionist conventions?

The use of creatures that look mythical and fantastical apply to the conventions of German expressionism as there are elements in this media that are very fantastical and mythical and an important part of this point is that none of the strange things are never explained in terms of why its there as indicated by our short video and this portrays ambiguous meanings and points and in the situation in the video it expresses the fear of the student and the extremity of the situation the student finds themselves in with the supported point of the viewer knowing this  would never happen in a rational situation which is a something that commonly happens in German expressionism media to open up multiple ideas of what things can represent and mean.

The scenes in the short video features a very strong black and white colour scheme with very dark shades of colours with the main focus being on the dark colours as shown by the character wearing black and white items of clothing  and darker shades of colour used in the backgrounds of the video and as well as this the lighting is very minimal and in some cases it is pitch black strengthening the very dark overall scheme of the video.

What skills have you developed during this task?

I have learnt how to use the camera and lighting equipment and how to set everything up as well as put everything away as well as safety setting up a set to protect the crew and actors as well as the equipment itself. I have also learnt alongside this how to use the equipment effectively to achieve a certain look for a shot by positioning the camera in a certain place and opening up the reflective flaps on the LEDs a certain amount and putting it at a certain angle and turning the dials at the right time.

I also learned how to coordinate and work within a team using the equipment to create certain shots that need executing according to a storyboard that was planned out before hand with still drawings of the shots we want to achieve and information about little details and how it would fit in the storyline.

Have you been inspired by any aspects of German expressionism to pass onto your assignment?

The mythical and fantastical creatures is an element i would like to use in my assignment as they can come in all sizes and shapes and the sound can be modified to sound higher pitched and lower pitched to suit the media and genre. They can also be modified to look less or more scary and unsettling.

Annotatated scenes

The colours in the image consist of the colours of the American flag with the white gate, red roses and blue sky excluding the stems which are green and is not a colour of the American flag. The flowers itself are framed by the gate or the sky or the wooden plank keeping the gate together with very minor overlaps between the sky and the gate. The flowers are mainly framed by the gate as it is white and has more of a contrasting makes it easier to see the stem as well as the flower. This shot is taken at allow angle so the gate looks like arrows pointing up and to show the stem in more detail as well as tease the idea smaller creatures being involved in the short film.

In this image here the hose is positioned in a phallic manner with the further visual element of the dig driving from the hose adding to the phallic manner of the placement of the hose. He is lying on a wire which has the hidden meaning that his head isn't even on a smooth surface but a single wire which can add to the current danger and suggest he is litterly 'hanging by a thread'. He is also positioned in the middle of a wire square which is giving the illusion that he is trapped in health terms and in the terms that he is in a square unable to move away from the square foreshadowing the immobile state he is in is in the hospital bed. A baby is walking up to him being the only one able to help as he I outside the gates and the house is far away but ultimately he would be unable to as he is a baby who would not know what to do or what has happened for the matter.

The water is very dark and although water is very clear this shot is filmed in a way that the water is dark keeping what is under the water a mystery and also the tall grass or wheat looks very ominous and sinister with the chance that there could easily be someone or something hiding in there and waiting for an opportunity its to harm the swimmer in some way. This is further suggested by using the water as leading lines to direct our eyes to the grass or wheat. Even though this is the focus for us the swimmer is looking directly at the route he needs to continue on implying he is oblivious to all this or there is no harm or danger at all and the route he is focusing on is shown by showing a path with leading lines which is followed by our eyes.

 Treatment for concept 1

Concept

The concept for my idea is road signs and specifically the signs are not being followed and the inspiration for this was seeing road signs and being interested by them and the potential situatiations where they can be broken and the consequences of these actions as a result for example if there is a no diving sign and someone dives into it not knowing it is not a deep pool they could break a few bones and have serious injuries to the body possibly being fatal. I am also intrigued with the ambiguous elements of road signs and how the subjects in road signs are just black figures to represent everybody and how the genders are represented in black figures by having a skirt for females and long hair meanwhile males are represented with a figure with no skirt and long hair and how this goes against the message that is spread about all clothes and hair styles being for both genders and blurring the line between what males and females can wear and look like additionally i am interested in the bold and contrasting colours and the science behind how the colour red grabs our attention and holds it while creating a sense of importance and danger towards the person viewing the sign. The shape of the sign is also apart of the message that is presented by the signs by being made into a certain shape to fit the use of the sign and the warning it is trying to give to the viewers.

Themes

The concept reflects the theme of contrast by having an opposition disobeying the road signs contrasting the road sign being placed there to protect and keep people safe with emerging themes of authority being shown by having the signs represent what the government and officials want the people to do for example a police crime scene tape disallows people from crossing the boundary created by the tape and this can be viewed as a way of blocking out the people from knowing any information the crime that has occurred in the location and blocking loved ones out from saying goodbye to victims if the loved ones are fatally effected by the crime. Safety is also a theme mentioned in this concept as some road signs are placed there to simple protect people and keep them safe from harm in terms of avoiding accidents of may scales from being hit by a train to being hit by a car to falling into groundworks to being fatally shocked by electricity.

Style

I want the overall tone to be a very unsettling and foreshadowing of possible later events to create an atmosphere of uncertainty of what will happen and could possibly happen along with emotion of worry and fear for the opposition and their safety. I want the photos to be in this style so they can act as a warning almost of the potential dangers of disobeying road signs. I want the colours to be very bland so the road sign featured in the photo can be the main focus and can be the element that gives the overall theme of the photo by having different figures and words on each sign in each photo to show situations of how multiple road signs messages can be broken and disobeyed. I am going to use leading lines in my photos to direct the focus of the viewer to the subject as the bold colours of the sign will mean that the main focus will already be the sign/signs and i want the secondary focus which is the thing that will be noticed secondly to be the subject going against what the sign is warning people not to do. The background will be very simple and feature very minimal buildings and more sky because the sky has connotations to angels and heaven to suggest the person will fatally effected in situation when the worst consequence can be death and with this i will use the night sky to represent hell and the devil if i want to add mentions of these themes if it apples the situation.

Intended Audience

My intended audience for my photos are young people between the ages of 12-25 with the focus of the age subgroup 12-16 is to scare and let the know how the dangers of not following road signs so when they enter the age subgroup of 16-25 they areaway the the signs are placed there for their own safety and they will be scared of not following road signs and feel that they will be putting themselves in serious danger if they don't follow the road signs and could potentially end up dead or in hospital. if the viewer is in the category of the 16-25 age group the aim is show them the consequence of no following road signs which may sound similar to the goal the 12-16 age group but in this case the result will not inform them of this message for the present unlike the age group 12-16 in which they will be informed for the future. I chose the age range from 12-25 because I believe that from the age of 12 children maybe allowed to grout by themselves and may get bored while out and decide tomes around and get into some trouble meaning that if the goal is met then these kids will know not tube too reckless and be a bit more careful. I chose 25 as the age to stop aiming my content at because at the age of 25 people mature enough to realise that not following road signs is dangerous and they would've grown to of their phase of being reckless and immature additionally at this age they would've learnt how to drive and would own a car and them being aware of different signs and what different signs mean especially when this learnt in your driving test in order to even have a driving licence.

Ethics

When taking photos I will be careful to not get anyone's face in the background and if they end up being in the shot I will ask for their permission to be in the photo if they are available at the time to be asked for permission and they are not in a rush or doing something at the current time. Also any models I use for the photos will be people I know and are happy to be photographed. Another issue I will face is health and safety issues regarding stunts such as jumping into pool and going into live road with real cars and putting the subject in danger and to tackle this issue I will not put the subject in situations where they can be harmed and I will ensure I photograph in places that allow photographs to be taken or example in museums there is a rule which is stated by signs that no photos are to be taken sir need tube carful where I shoot my photos.

Banksy uses Steve Jobs artwork to highlight refugee crisis | Banksy | The Guardian

This artwork interests me because of the hard hitting addition of Steve jobs making the message Banksy is trying to portray instantly stronger as Steve Jobs was known to be very rich and successful with his business 'Apple' leading to him becoming known by everyone as a result. I like how the message is shown in a way which is so clear with the comparison of Steve jobs to the beat-up bag over his shoulder and the computer he is holding is interesting nod to the present. In faded font there is two words that say free Syria being a little nod the other message Banksy is trying to get across.

This artwork by Banksy is called 'mobile lovers' and features a man and woman who are a couple partially hugging each other while being hypnotised by their phones in a position where it appears that they would kiss but instead they are staring at phone screens behind each others back. I like how this work shows the disconnection between two people due to mobile phones and it is suggested by this work that there also may be a disconnection in terms of the man and lady are speaking to other people while being together while both the man and the lady are unaware of this presenting ambiguous meaning depending on how the person views the work. The hug they are sharing which represents love and closeness contrasts from the distant suggestion from the phone screens behind their backs exaggerating the distant manner the phones add to the work. The black and white colour scheme of the art reflects the cold and unloving nature of the work.

This work is called 'Bomb Hugger (Bomb Love)' and displays a very strong image of a girl holding a bomb with a smile on her face  with the bomb contrasting to the innocent girl because the girl is happy and poses as no threat but the bomb on the other hand poses as a threat and the bomb being that close to the girl gives us anxiety and makes us fear for the girls life. This can have many meaning as a interpretive piece of art and can be interpreted in many ways with all of them being negative being intentional by the artist as he wants to spread a message about the things that are wrong with politics and society and other controversial themes.

I think researching Banksys artwork has supported my idea of rebeling against something and disobeying but in my case I will be showing cases of rebelling against something that has good intentions and meaning making the subject the one in the wrong but in Banksys case he is showing his opinions on thing that are wrong and he is in the right depending on different perspectives but a majority would agree that his artwork is rebelling against things that can be considered 'bad'.

One thing that all these photos have in common is the fact that there is negative space in the photo and this means that there is space to have a subject in the photo as I want the subject to be a one of the main focuses for the photographs. each photo shows a different angle a photo can be taken as as well as how the elements of the photo can be placed in the composition. These need to be considered when taking my photos because the slightest adjustment can change how the subject is portrayed to the audience.

It was at his point the I decided I wanted to shift from road signs to signs in general signs as I also discovered I also had an interest in signs in general and wanted to broaden my theme slightly to all signs as this was not a drastic change and would allow me to continue with the research I was already doing but I would have to make light changes to my research to make it reliable to all signs.

I composed a board of all images of signs I found on google images and Pinterest to put the images in a form in which I can spot patterns in images I like and this will help me decide how to create my photos as I have a broad idea of what colours and compositions I like and also any effect and filters I spotted that I like that I can use in my photos.

These signs use very professional fonts that are very bold and are east to read for the obvious reason so they can be easily read in understood as people don't focus too much on signs and would prefer to quickly glance and understand quickly other than having to have a good look at the sign and take the tie to understand what the text says because the sign uses font that is childish and overuses curved lines to the point where there are no straight lines used in the font which is  important when making a font readable.

The actual font used in actual signs is Highway Gothic and this font is used worldwide for signs.

These fonts are the fonts that are similar and can be used if I need to create my own sign for my photos:

Helvatica
Futura
Franklin gothic
Myriad

Helvertica is a sans-serif font and I find it would work very well on a sign because it has a very similar manner to the for currently used in signs.

Futura is a very bold and is good for text that is quite small as it enlarges the text and the text has little to no curves making it very easy to read.

Franklin Gothic is a slightly less professional font over Helvetica and is less likely to be used over Helvetica but follows the features of an effective font house on a sign.

Myriad is a sans-serif font that is also very bold and enlarges small text simply to Futura and has gentle sloping.

I attempted to draw these fonts in case I needed to create some DIY signs for my photos and I shaded half of each font so I could see what it looked like in two opposing tones as there are cases where the text can be a dark shade and cases where a lighter shades are required.

Researching different fonts have helped me understand which signs to pick to be featured in my photographs and how the font can enforce the message on a sign and how this would mean I would need to intensify the action of the subject to bale out the sign and the font.

I took some photos myself of my sister on the train with permission to practice photographing peoples faces with camera glare and lighting and practicing photographing the most effective angles. I took these photos on my iPhone XR with the 16:9 aspect ratio.

These photographs were a good practice of positioning the camera and the subject to adjust the light intensity and how much of the face is covered by the light as well as how to create background which is moving while the subject is still and how much lighting should be allowed in the camera and if camera glare should be used. Through this photoshoot I also experimented with reflections in windows and how you can increase and decrease the opacity of the contents in the mirror or window by moving the subject further away or closer to the surface.

I chose this picture to use because I like the framing provided by the subjects arm and head and the door frame and how the door acts as leading lines into the office. Additionally the sign is clearly shown in the photograph and there is a two block composition going on with the door and the rest of the contents.

This door in this photo looks very mechanical and secure and actually sets off an alarm when opened which is why the subject uses both hands to open the door. Additionally if the view looks through the window they can see a wall which faces the direction the corridor is facing acting as a leading line for the eye to follow and the door also acts as a leading line to the subject as it follows the direction of the subject.

Eventhough the subject is out of focus I can make it work by using it as method of getting the viewers to see the sign better as the subject is visually more interesting and vibrant and this also created depth and a method of the viewers being able to figure out which item is closer to the camera (the subject and the sign). the background shows a hallway facing left if you stand in where the sign is which is the direction of the corridor we can see in the photo showing which direction the subject should be walking.

This photo presents someone drinking water in one of the edit bays next to a sign that says 'Notice no eating and drinking in this area' with a corridor exposed in the photo which is included in the photo to create fear due to the fact he could easily be caught if he misses someone walking closer to the edit block and the fact that the subject is drinking right next to the sign shows he is aware that he is breaking the rules but continues to drink the water without any fear and thought that he is breaking a rule.

This photo is very similar to the third photo and has the same charactaristics but the pose holds a different meaning as in the third photo the meaning is that he is on the phone to someone and is in a relaxed position suggesting he has no intent to move from the spot and he is looking at the floor. This contrasts the the pose in this photograph because in this photo he is not on his phone and appears to be looking at his surrounding suggesting he is waiting for a friend an has been waiting for a few minutes as he has rested himself on the wall in a comfortable position. he is crossing his arms connoting that he is not scared of the consequences and does not care if he is caught.

Edits

This is the unedited photo and as you can see the lights are quite bright and there is an awkward shadow in the top right corner so I attempted to dim the lights and remove or make the shadow less noticeable.

When editing I struggled to remove the shadow and found I could not remove the shadow without drastically changing the photo dramatically and ruining it in the process so I left the shadow and to dim the lights I messed around with hue, saturation, brightness, exposure and contrast and by changing each of these I managed to dim the spotlights just enough after many adjusting.

I was only able to do one edit as I ran out of time and did not have enough time to complete the other 4 edits.

From the feedback I got from my classmates the overall result I got is that I deeply found meanings in signs and composition and lighting of sign photography and the photos were well edited and explained as well as taken with the interest clearly showing but my main criticism was that  the information was not presented in a slow manner and was rushed through an people struggled to understand as a result and the research could've been improved as well as more experimentation could've been done.

Photo 3

Frans Lanting is vert clearly a nature photographer and his photography style features very vibrant colours and heavy sunlight exposure with his photos being taken in daytime and evenings to get natural lighting for his photographs and i am heavily inspired by Lantings use of colours and how saturated the colours are without using a wide range of colours so the viewer does not get overloaded with colours and simple colour palettes are used in his photos.

Brassaï, Gyula Halász

Photo 1

Photo 2

Photo 3

Brassaï has a very moody and expressionist style of photography and and what interested me and drew me to his work is the use of light and how in some of his photos how light is reflected onto different surface floors and how the subject is lit up using different types of lighting for different effects.

Macro Photography

Macro photography is something I chose to research because I wanted to explore more ways of photographing objects that are not the conventional longshot and the way macro photography zooms in on an object and blurs the background putting the focus on the main object is intriguing for w and as I am doing signs it would be useful if i decide to take one of my photographs in a macro style to mix up the variety of photography styles.

Portrait Photography

Portrait photography is something I wanted it research because it is a very versatile style of photograph and can be executed in so many ways depending on the context of the piece and similarly to Macro photography the background can blurred to create extra focus on the subject and to create the illusion of depth for the subject and the backdrop. The way the subjects are photographed is in a way where all of their features are visible to the camera supported by the close-up shot in traditional portrait photography but sometimes the photographer decides to use longer shots to switch up the photograph and show more of the background.

Proof of concept 2

For my proof of concept 2 I want to focus on being fake on social media and focus on a subject who makes their life seem great and makes themselves seem happy on social media but they is very unhappy and their life is very dull.

Social media platforms

Instagram-Instagram is a good choice to use because their audience is mainly teenagers and the platform features a lot of fake content due to the main people on the app who are influencers being fake and the encourages their many followers to continue this fake theme onto their content.

Snapchat-Snapchat is an app that fake lifestyles are also encouraged as people share their content to their stories which be viewed as suscriptions if the other person does not follow them back and if they do they appear as circles on an horizontal line on the stories page and people who uses snapchat may feel to create the most exiting stories and only post the exiting moments and also pretending to be upset is a common thing done on snapchat and this makes people who genuinely need someone to talk to and needs help look like they are attention seeking.

Tiktok- Tiktok is a very popular app that is very addictive as the app is designed to keep the viewer hooked onto the app and unlike snapchat and instagram this app features much more relaxed and genuine content  with the account owner posting videos of them talking normally and other content that is very exiting  and adventurous with this but the problem lies in how toxic people on Tiktok can be and how users can feel pressured to look a certain way or act a certain way to get more views.

Twitter- Twitter is not as popular as the other platforms and is mainly used by gamers and news sharing to share clips of games and talk about topics and share information to the users following sharing a very toxic atmosphere on the app like tiktok and users tend to avoid this app due to to the toxic nature of having many other users say negative things and bash someones opinions that are not a shared option unless it is a controversial topic and the user is in the wrong.

Facebook- Facebooks main audience is older people above the age of 30 and the content on facebook is very tailored to that audience and this app is used by the parents of younger people while the younger people use the other apps listed.

Youtube-Youtube is an online video streaming and sharing application that features vey honest content compared to the other social media apps but still has fake content in the form of vlogs the specifically pick out the good bits and only shot the good bits making the viewers ink that their life is only happiness and adventure and friends but in reality they have very bad days and don't show the bad aspects of their life.

The image above shows apps with a red counter on the top right corner with the purpose of showing how much messages and content that the user has missed. The circular block with the number inside is red because it is a very standout colour and catches the attention of the user instantly. I chose to use the iPhone counter because iPhones are the most popular brand of smartphone owned by a higher percentage of people.

A common way that social media users make themselves look better is by using filters which are overlays that you can use to cover any skin imperfections and overall just make your face look better than it actually is. I will show this by using a filter from snapchat on myself and showing before and after.

I wanted to make sure I wasn't scared to include a diverse range of people in my final project so I drew out any potential headwear that people wear for religious reasons and researched the 6 religions so I was aware of their preferences and any beliefs that I needed to be aware of before using these people as examples or subjects in my proof of concept 2.

I decided to research this because I wanted to be educated on things that would offend someone regarding their faith and beliefs and any actions that could end up being offensive as well as diet and what people with different faiths are allowed to eat and not eat.

Emily in Paris

'Emily In Paris' is a tv series on Netflix and has 10 episodes and a season 2 which will air in 22nd of November 2021 but i will be focusing on season 1 as all the peisodes for season 1 have already been aired. I have not watched the show myself but from the information i have i feel it reflects the theme of pretending to be happy on social media as in the trailer linked below the protagonist Emily moves to Paris and struggles to find her feet and faces many issues regarding her new workplace, love and finding her place in society. In the trailer i watched there is a shot where she is lying in a bed with her fiend and in the trailer this is the only shot where she is taking an photograph with intention to and straight after this the trailer shows her struggle to find love and her views getting her in trouble in her workplace and struggling settle into her workplace.

There are comments on this trailer that express their own opinions on how fake the show seems to be portrayed.

Jayant Sajet Ram
'Emily has a mediocre income but everything she seems to wear happens to be from Chanel.'

Theo Murray

'I’m from France the funniest part of this series is when the French people were speaking in English to each other. That is impossible ...'

Paul Florent

'As a Parisian myself, this kind of movie makes me so embarassed. People : this Paris doesn't exist. Unless you're a millionaire.'

These comments seem to criticize the way Emily and Paris is represented in general and is criticized because of its mostly white cast and offensive stereotypes of the French people.

He's All That

He's All That' is a remake of 1999 'She's All That' and features Tiktok star Addison Rae and Tannar Buchanan and The movie follows A girl called Padgett who is very famous on social media and at the start of the movie lives a fake life on social media and her friends end up being fake and betraying her later on except friend who sticks by her who makes a bet to see if she can turn Tannar who is called Cameron into someone who is more attractive and approachable and as well as being the prom king. Padgett is shown to change as the movie goes on to someone who is not fake and does not put on a fake face but i am focusing on the start of the movie where she is portrayed in a fake manner on her social media pages.

In this screen shot from the trailer we can see Padgett taking a selfie with the horse with Cameron looking at her like he just wants to get on with the horse riding lesson and he says straight after the line 'you cant enjoy this without sharing' and she replies with 'just capturing the moment' when we as as an audience know she wants to capture the moment as it is an exiting thing to post on her social media page to continue the illusion of her perfect life. The time the photo is taken shows significance because she took the photo when she is rested on the horse and not when she was struggling to get on the horse to further support her perfect life on social media by pretending she is good at everything she does. She also puts on a smile to make it appear like she is always happy and smiling suggesting she has no issues to make her unhappy to her followers.

I was looking at existing scripts and found one for 2018 'The Darkest Minds' and this script contains dialogue so varies from silent scripts.

https://transcripts.thedealr.net/script.php/the-darkest-minds-2018-H5mI

In the script the very little is revealed and it is only shown what is happening making the viewer want to watch on to get some context on why is happening and how this effects what happens afterwards.

Characters personalities are shown with the actions that are instructed to do and the punctuation such as exclamation marks and question marks. The question marks show innocence and confusion by presenting the charactar as unaware of the danger that is incoming  and what they are in trouble for and what they have done. Exclamation marks can be used both ways to show a character as the victim or the perpetrator by using it in a manner that is towards someone in an aggressive manner in which the victim has not done anything for the character to fight back and doing vice versa portrays the character as the victim of a situation or/and other characters. The actions exaggerates how the character reacts to the situation and how their body is reacting as well.

Here is an example used in the script

I like how the script is written in a way that each line is not a continuous sentence and there are very little words on each line making easier to interpret the words because actors can look at single words at a time to learn the lines and actions. It follows a shopping list layout for this reason.

The main character Ruby Daly is an orange which is the most dangerous colour for someone who is alive in the movie as all the other oranges and reds were killed when they got to the camps except the presidents son who is another orange. She manages to stay alive by sending a mind message that makes him follow the order by mind control to pass her as a green. this information is provided by the script.

Even though Ruby has a dangerous ability that is an orange she is very harmless throughout the whole movie and uses her ability to protect her friends and herself from danger. The contrast between the presidents son Clancy Gray at the climax when Clancy is revealed to be on his dads side the whole time to Ruby is at the climax Clancy is very aggressive and causes destruction using his ability while Ruby fights back and does not use her ability to hurt others and the environment.

Treatment

Concept

The concept for my Proof of concept 2 is about social media and being fake and specifically focusing on someone who fakes a happy lifestyle on social media but is unhappy. I decided to do this subject because as a social media user I find often that the people faking their lives are creating more damage to their viewers in a manner of spreading negative emotions of jealously, envy, self-hatred and gives an overall wrong impression of what the person on the app is trying to give which would be hope and positivity if the person intends to pretend on social media for these reasons, if not then it is a different case because then the intentions are simple just to glamourize their life and hide their problems and imperfections. Another way glamourizing your life on social media and putting on a face images your audience is by making them fell like their lives are not as exiting and interesting and this raises the need to get more friends and go on more experiences being positive and negative by encouraging the audience to spend more time with family and friends and strengthen relationships between them while making memories but this may not be the case for anyone who is struggling financially and may not be able to afford these experiences and there are people who may not have anyone or little people in their lives and struggle to meet new people due to anxiety and low self-confidence due to them feeling everyone is better than them being another negative effect of putting on a act on social media.

Theme

The theme is a very clear representation of contrast and shows this by having the contrast between the happiness shown on the social media pages to the unhappiness the user feels when they are being genuine. There is also a contrast between the fake persona the user gives themselves and the genuine self giving me the freedom to make my POC2 more ambiguous because I can make one contrast clear while keeping the contrasting point ambitious if it improves the content and the option of making both contrasts clear if I choose to do that instead. A theme of negative effect of social media also intertwines with the topic and correlates very closely to the subject of being fake as it is a result of one of the negative effect of social media and how it can effect users who see the content subconsciously and consciously.

Style

I want my proof of concept to feel modern and up to date with the times right now and to achieve this aesthetic I plan on using very bright colours to reflect the mask the user is putting on and to contrast to the true feelings of the user behind the scenes. I want lights that are provided by digital items such as a camera flash and digital screens to make it feel like they can't run away from the technology that they are using to hide their true feelings of sadness and wherever they go they are faces with digital devices making the viewer feel like they can't catch a break from the digital devices as well as the protagonist.

Intended Audience

My intended audience is all social media users of any ethnicity, race, social class, interests with the content being aimed at the younger users who can be easily influenced with the general age group of 5-23 excluding anyone older as they tend to be realistic on social media and care less meanwhile younger people are easily influenced by influencers and other accounts to corporate a similar style on their pages. The reason I included very young children is because nowadays children are growing up with technology and very young children are stereotypically know to be engrossed into children's YouTube channels which are very scripted and exaggerated especially American creators.

Ethics

I briefly researched the different religions and the headgear and in each religion have to wear as well as informed myself of what thy are allowed to eat and drink and certain rules and religious ethical rules they have how they worship and pray. In my script I may use the names of popular social media applications but these names can be used as long as I don't make statements that suggest or state that take credit away from the creators and developers and coders of the platform. I will also keep in consideration the clothing that the characters wear for reasons that some religions have rules on what someone can wear. I will also ensure that all types of people are considered as characters and I will not represent them in a offensive manner.

This article mainly focuses on the twitter thread which contains users reposting photos of them when they looked happy but they were struggling and not happy. Some of my favourite example are below:

These replies stood out to me because they all show connotations to happiness and in the first reply I used as an example it litterly states 'loving my best life' but although the connotations and denotations are shown the caption explains how they were really feeling and what they were trying to fake their audience and the ides of just because someone is laughing and having fun with a group that does not mean they are truly happy and they could only be happy in that moment.

https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/2019/7/16/20689832/instagram-photo-editing-app-facetune

This article bests it focus on Facetune and looking through the strike I found a few lines that really grabbed my attention and it is 'Inspired by digital retouching and filters, more people are undergoing surgery or requesting dermatological procedures to permanently alter their faces. And just like in Infinite Jest, there’s even a name for this phenomenon: “Video-Physiognomic Dysphoria.”. When we think about Facetune and the damage it can have on young people we associate it with feeling bad about their actual bodies and wanting to make themselves look better but we don't expect it to go so far that people undergo surgery to permanently change their appearance as a result of Facetune and photo editing.

Even after all the effort a user can go through to edit their photos they still might not look good as Facetune can only do so much and there is a limit to what it can improve also for some users Facetune might not even improve them because they already look as good so by using Facetune they are essentially sabotaging themselves making themselves look even worse.

Another thing I want to mention is using the app to make extreme changes to the point where is is too noticeable leading to them getting hate and criticism creating two options for the user to take with one option being to learn to love their body and themselves resulting into them gradually using less Facetune over time or it can lead them to hating themselves even more as they could possibly feel that even Facetune can't help them achieve their dream look.

The talk of influencers and celebrities using Facetune and being outed for it can discourage users form using it it they are educated by people reacting on how unrealistic they make their photos look but there is also the side not of users being aware of all these big names using Facetune suggesting that it is okay as they use it and the have a big following. Influencers are controversial because they get their following from editing their photos and putting on a heavily curated life.

https://time.com/collection/guide-to-happiness/4882372/social-media-facebook-instagram-unhappy/

This article answers the question which is 'is social media making me miserable' and gives advice to the reader on tips how to use less social media and how to cut down on social media. The article backs up their claims with scientific evidence and past experiment results.

Mentioned is a experiment that proves that 'Quitting social media seems to improve mood' which consisted of 'a study team from Denmark split more than a thousand Facebook users into two groups and asked one of those groups to take a week-long break from the social site. Compared to those who kept using Facebook as usual, the people who took a break experienced big jumps in life satisfaction and positive emotions. The more a person had used Facebook before taking a break, the greater his happiness boost after giving it up, the study data show.'

Even though the article focuses solely on the negatives of social media it talks little bit about the positives of social media but very briefly to the point where you have to really look through the article to find it mentioned in the first place. The article tells the reader that social media can be used positively but it comes down to who is using the media and the platform being used.

One tip that is given to the reader is 'Trimming your social habit down to just one platform' to 'lighten your brain’s load' and unfolding and blocking users or news streams that stress you out. Additionally usage for kids is recommended to be watched and watching the Childs emotions as the writer feels that they have better things to do than be staring at a screen when they could be playing with friends or hanging out with them or anything other than stare at a screen. The water also criticises giving children a phone at a young age and backs up this point with evidence from a 2016 survey which shows children as young as 10 are being given phones.

Target audience-10-23

Todorov's Narrative Theory

Tzvetan Todorov was a Bulgarian-French historian, Philosopher, structuralist literary critic, sociologist and essayist. He created the Todorov narrative theory that can be still be applied to media now with the theory following a simple structure

Repair- They make up and the new students helps character 1 find happiness

New Equilibrium- Character 1 works to improve her home life and is happier.

Then Came You (2018)

'Then Came You' (2018) is my main influence for this script as it has many similarities such as the protagonist Calvin (Asa Butterfield) being helped by the side character Skye (Maisie Williams) to find happiness and love themselves and they improve their lives as a result.  I like the simplicity of the plot but the amount of content you can put into the story due to the plot being simple and the journey can be put into so much detail because there are no side quests and plots that that need to be covered in the script. Also the reader is forced to feel emotions throughout and at the end of the story because they are taken through the journey and see the progress and journey taken by the characters to achieve the goal. I like how in the movie the two characters keep a very friend based friendship and I want to use this relationship between them as friends in my script as it keeps the focus on the journey to happiness and the side plot of them falling in love does not distract the viewer from the main plot. This movie also encouraged me to research Movember and toxic masculinity while additionally using elements from the side character Skye in my character profile with one being how she isn't being controlled by male characters as we see in other tv and film and her personality is very out there supported by her choice of clothes and footwear which is knee-high converses which are very obnoxious and this is matched by her choices of hair varying of many colours and styles. Her clothes are very bright and have very interesting and eye-catching textures with high contrast between the clothing items she wears in a outfit. I will how images below of these clothing items and her outfits in the movie.

Movember

Movember is an organisation that was formed in 2003 by Adam Garone, Travis Garone, Luke Slattery and Justin Coghlan and is a charity with the goal of helping men live happier, healthier and longer lives and the headquarters are in Melbourne, Australia. They raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancers. I wanted to mention this because I wanted to stray away from not having the male characters show their feelings because they feel the need to be 'masculine' and 'manly' and if i do include this stereotype in the script I will show the character slowly realise they can show their feelings and emotions without worrying about not being 'masculine' and 'manly'. If it is required I will also mention testicular and prostate cancers to spread the message the charity is trying to spread.

Character Profiles

Protagonist

Joy Mizuki
15 Years Old
Student at school

I chose the name Joy because I wanted the character to reader to get the first impressions that she is a joyful person even if we know someone's name being hope does not mean they are hopeful for example but this does not mean the reader will gain a subliminal message and a very basic impression of the character. I also picked this name because I wanted it to contrast the lack of joy from her character at the start and reflect the joy she gains from her journey to happiness.

Joy feels pressured to work hard at school and be the best at everything she does to make her parents proud but whatever she does it doesn't get noticed due to her parents being busy with work and business trips.

Joys Mother

Jane Mizuki
43 Years old
Works as a physiatrist

Joys father

Eugene Mizuki
39 years old
Works as professor at University

I will introduce Joys parents as very work focuses people and they will not show much personality and love towards each other but when Joy gets the courage to stop her parents from being so work obsessed their personalities will start to show and they will start to show more love towards each other instead of being very cold and distant towards each other.

Joys neighbours

Carl Alterbrook
47 years old
Works as a GP

Janet Alterbrook
45 years old
Works as a swimming coach

The NEIGHBOURS will be very friendly and loving towards each other and represent a loving family which will be used to contrast the cold nature of Joys family and to show Joy how she should aspire to change the ways of her family when she feels action needs to be taken

Joys friends

Samantha (Sam) Higgins
16 years old
student at school

Rose Humphrey
15 years old
student at school

Isabella (Izzy) Cabello
16 years old
student at school

Janine (Jan) Johnson
15 years old
student at school

Johnathon (John) Sicci
15 Years Old
Student at school

Johns mother

Shanice Sicci
42 years old
Works as an art curator

Johns father

David Sicci
 45 years old
Works as an design consultant

Johns brother

I wanted to show how having a stable family who give their children attention and being loved can affect the child in a positive way through this character but I also want to be careful to make sure John does get disciplined when he does something wrong and he is taught how to be respectful and considerate otherwise he would have to be portrayed as a child who gets away with everything and is a spoiled rich kid with no manners towards other people and society. John has 1 sibling who studies Fashion at University. I want to also be careful not to show toxic positivity which is dismissing negative emotions and responding to these negative emotions with positivity when it is not needed.

John will also be bi-sexual and will represent the LGBTQ+ community with his family being very supportive of him showing how having a supportive family can help a person be happier by not being hated on for their differences.

I wanted to portray Johns family as a very creative family so his dad will be design consultant and his mom will be a art curator and  his bother is studying Fashion at University. I wanted to show Johns family as quite creative because creative people are viewed as open-minded explaining why they accepted John being bi and to show suggest that someone deciding to do traditional jobs and creative jobs doesn't define if someone is happy or unhappy and traditional jobs only make someone unhappy if they overwork themselves by having Joys parents learn to manage work and home life later on in the story.

I used very diverse characters because I wanted many type of people to enjoy the script by having  relating themselves to a character and there is a range of characters for many different types of people to relate to while representing many different types of people at the same time. Additionally having a wide range of characters with differences keeps the reader engaged because they want to learn more about each character as they have their differences and they may want to learn more about thee differences make them stand out to the crowd.

Headteacher
Mr Jonas Ridge
32 years old

The headteacher will be 32 year old which will reflect his understanding of the students issues  as he is is still quite young to be a headteacher meaning that the students feel like they can come to him to talk about their school problems as well as more personal issues as they feel he can relate to them. He is very popular among the students and the students like to have conversations with him but when a student needs disciplining he will discipline them in a way that isn't too harsh and finds out the root why they are breaking the rules.

Draft 1

INT. HOUSE

JOY plonks herself on the sofa and throws her bag onto the floor. The bag is thrown in the centre of the room her football boots fall out of her bag.

                                                                JOY

                                          MOM, DAD I’m home

Her Parents don’t reply so she goes upstairs to check and calls out while walking up the stairs.

                                                               JOY:

MUM! DAD! MUUUMM! DAAADD! IMMM HOME!

JOY reaches the top of the stairs and checks her parents office rooms and checks their bedroom and her bedroom and then turns to go downstairs. JOY walks own the stairs and goes into the kitchen looking for a snack and finds a post-it-note on the fridge when JOY is about to open it.

The radio plays in the background.

‘Latest news of a break-in at McDonalds and a fire in Kings Cross primary school leaving 8 children in hospital but we now move onto the weather for the week……’

JOY turns off the radio and reads the post it note on the fridge.

‘At work pizza in oven. From MUM AND DAD’

JOY opens the backdoor to the garden and asks the NEIGBOURS what is going on.

                                                           JOY:

What’s going on her then

                                                    CARL

                                                              JOY:

If you’re okay with it ill come, just wait 5 minutes

JOY takes the last few bites of the pizza and puts on her coat after putting the remaining pizza back into the oven and grabs her keys before leaving the house and knocking onto the NEIGBOURS door and she is let in by NEIGBOUR 2 who has a smile on her face.

Evaluation

How did your POCs explore the theme of contrast?

The contrast between the toxic social media environment and real life is presented by the characters shown in the script by using the neighbours as a representation of a very positive and supporting environment and the friend group being very negative and competitive in a manner where everyone is competing for something or to be better than other people. I have also presented toxic social media as harmful in an emotional manner and making people scared to embrace their true selves and appearance by using the characters to show how judgements can effect peoples confidence.

What skills did you hope to develop with each POC?

With each POC I hope to develop my skills in that area so versatility between the different media types can be developed and I can be given any of the types and create a great media piece. There will still be strong points and weak points when it comes to the different media types but I hope to get to point were I can adapt and pass on my knowledge to any type of media. I also want to develop the ability to translate an idea in my head into a media piece in the form it best suits and create a clear showing of the thought process and inspirations behind the piece along with the experimentation and problems and flaws I faced along the way.

How did you develop these skills throughout the assignment?

Throughout the assignment we chose different media types to pursue for the POC and my two POCs were different and very contrasting meaning I can experiment with two types of different media types and learn more about them. I chose script-writing and photography because script-writing is very word-based while photography is very visual and the processes to create the final results is very different for the two media types and also translating an idea into two differing media forms means you have to think about things differently and do thing differently for the two types.

How might you further develop your skills in the future?

In the future I will continue to pick media types that I am not that great at to practice creating product in that form and also pick media types I am very skilled at so I am putting practice into media mediums I am good at to make me even better and become even more skilled in one medium of media. As well as this I will try new methods of experimentation and research to elevate the results of the experimentation and research with the possibility that i could find a technique that I really like an works well and would only be found out by trying new methods of experimentation leading to this method being used in other proof of concepts where it is necessary and would improve the quality of the piece.

What problems did you face when developing your proof of concepts ? How did you overcome these?

When developing my proof of concepts found the problem of not knowing what to experiment with and what to research but I overcame this problem by researching something and experimenting with findings from the research balancing the amount of research and experimentation meaning that there is not to much research as it is preferable to have more experimentation as research is use to learn more and find out more about something while experimentation is used to try new things and see if anything new ends up being useful.

How did you develop your work following self-reflection/peer feedback?

Using the feedback got from my peers I took on board what they said and kept in mind the little errors such as spelling and formatting that can overall effect the piece majorly along with the more major issues such as putting more planning and preparation into the piece to improve the piece and creating more drafts to ensure the piece is as good as it can get and up to a standard when it is been checked and edited many times and thoroughly evaluated to ensure it is very good quality and of a standard that it is good enough to pass as a final piece. Peer feedback is good for spotting mistakes and improvements that i would not notice yourself and getting another perspective on the piece to suggest changes that I would not think of doing as well as some students being a lot more skilled in the media type and being able to point out things that I could change and errors from a more skilled perspective.

Critically evaluate your proofs. What has been successful? hast can be improved?
Make sure that you refer to your target audience here.

For the first proof of concept a lot more experimentation could've been done and in general there could've been more content all together as it looks quite bland and there is very little research and experimentation as well as this the final edit could be explained more as screenshots are shown with no explanation and looking through it it looks very out of place and it is easier to wonder why it is there and what the purpose of it is as well as what it is linked to. Although this is the case the final edit turned out quite well and the photos taken in the photoshoot was very fitting for the theme The second proof of concept is very heavy in research and could do with a lot more experimentation as there is very little experimentation which in this case would support the final piece and would improve. With this point in mind the drafts could've been extended and the final piece could've been drafted at least once more but even though there could've been more drafts the drafts were well done and well edited to remove mistakes and make it flow making it readable and understandable. The research is very well thought through and relevant topics as well as themes that may be needed later in the preparation are well researched and explored even though there could've been more experimentation.

MRS PARKER is stood in front of the desk JOY is sitting at and staring directly at her.

                     MRS PARKER:

When JOY is walking through the corridor she sees a David having a tour around the school and carries on to the field to meet her Friends.

IZZY, SAM, ROSE AND JAN call out to her to the bench they are sitting at after looking like they are ending a conversation about her suggested by the expressions on their face.

They all laugh and smile during the conversation.

                        ROSE:

I was doing my homework last night and it was so hard!

                         JAN:

It wasn’t hard your just don’t know how to waffle on about Macbeth

                      JAN:

After everything we’ve done for you

                       SAM:

They all laugh to disguise their annoyance at JOY and the bell rings to get to their next lesson.

                        JOY:

Frans Lanting is vert clearly a nature photographer and his photography style features very vibrant colours and heavy sunlight exposure with his photos being taken in daytime and evenings to get natural lighting for his photographs and i am heavily inspired by Lantings use of colours and how saturated the colours are without using a wide range of colours so the viewer does not get overloaded with colours and simple colour palettes are used in his photos.

Brassaï, Gyula Halász
