Unit 4

Which piece of work are you most proud of and why?

I am most proud of may latest project on narrative photography in black and white because i experimented in areas that I haven't experimented with before and i found to have improved in these skills dramatically and become more experienced in telling a story using photos and for the amount of photos I used I feel that I told the story in a very good manner and made the narrative very clear. I also feel learning narrative photography supports narratives building in other elements of media using methods I used in my photos. This can be translated to radio written work and film based projects. Using black and white format for my photos also meant that I kept that in mind while taking my photos and I positioned the camera in areas where there would be high contrast between colours and making sure any element in the photo I want to be highlighted was contrasting and the lighting was friendly for the black and white format. I am very happy with how I edited the photos and how I presented the photos in black and white to create dramatic effect and create a very dark and gloomy vibe from my photos.

What did you enjoy most about assignment 1: contrast?

I enjoyed exploring different types of media and seeing which types of media i enjoyed and which types I hated. as well as what I was very skilled in already wand what types of meds ai needed to improve on. I enjoyed the concept as it gave opportunities to explore minor contests as well as opposing contrasts and themes that have contrast and how the different opposing components contrast each other and why they contrast each other as well as the effects of the contrast. I loved seeing my research build up into solid ideas and inspirations as well as the new paths the contents I was researching took me and seeing a simple source researched branch into a whole tree with Manu branches of information and ideas and sourced to explore.

What did you enjoy about assignment 2: adaptation?

I enjoyed researching different examples of adaptations and how adaptations are executed and in terms of book to film adaptations I was curious on the process of deciding which parts in the book that they include in the movie adaptation and how book is translated into film. I additionally enjoyed putting my own spin and flair on an already existing piece of media and using the painting by Edward Hopper and adapting it into a different form of media to be shown in a different manner. I enjoyed taking the photographs and editing them and i found the process fun as I was enhancing my skills in photography and editing.

Are there any themes in your previous work that you are interested to further explore with the FMP?

I am interested to further explore the black and white theme and how using black and white and eliminating colour changes the effect that the media gives off and with this I am interested in experimenting with colour to send different subliminal messages to the viewer and create a shift in effect by simply changing round the colour sand inverting the colours. I am also interested in exploring how themes can be shown in different forms of media and the differences that occur when translating to different medias. I like creating media presenting sensitive topics and this is reflected through past projects and researching the effect and how these sensitise issues affect different factors and using the already existing emotions around the topic to create further feeling in the viewer and I would like to continue this theme of creating strong emotions and reactions.

Create a list of skills/practices that you might like to apply to your FMP?

Knowledge of camera angles

Knowledge of how to use camera settings

Communication skills with an actor/model and with a team

Photoshop

Editing software

Setting up lighting equipment

Knowledge of how to structure written media

Knowing what to research and the best way to show the thought process

How would you like to further develop your skills/practices?

I would like to develop my skills in software use so I can create very sophisticated transitions and edits as well as master editing footage in a way that it is perfectly cut and sounds and transitions can be added along with filters and effects in a experienced manner. I would like to also master my photoshop knowledge so I can create amazing edits and make the photos I take very visually pleasing with the side benefit of remove any imperfections as well as enhance elements in the photograph and add necessary components to create an certain effect and amplify elements.

Jean Michel BasquiatModern Art Monday Presents: Jean-Michel Basquiat, The Death of Michael Stewart | The Worley Gig

Defacement (The Death Of Michael Stewart)

This piece of artwork is located in the Guggenheim and the theme is very clear in the graffiti with policemen being drawn in a very childish-like manner and the weapons are being drawn as pencils fitting in with the theme of the childish drawings and the shadow bowing painted as just simply a black shadow. The theme of police brutality and racism is further presented by the word 'defacement'. This graffiti work is a memorial to Michael Stewart, as stated in the name of the piece, who died as a result of police brutality towards black people. This was the most personal painting for Jean Michel Basquiat and said himself 'It could've been me'.

Art work by Jean-Michel Basquiat

King Pleasure (1983)

At the time King Pleasure was the name of bartender turned jazz vocalist whose song 'Moodys Mood For Love' made him very well-known and famous. I chose to research this piece because I like how simple the piece is while still having the success and recognition it does. This shows how influential he was as an artist and the way he has painted this artwork is very interesting as he has made it look very child-like which is a reoccurring theme in his work and ion this one in particular the Childs drawing look is achieved by having scribbles on the side which look like attempts as one has zigzag lines underneath the scribes as the artist tried to create a crown in this spot and the same applies to curved line as the space between the two upper brown scribbles looks very similar to area where the final piece is located.

undefined

    In Italian (1983)

This piece of artwork is very chaotic and needs a little effort and time to process every little element and the meaning making this one of his more complex work and the layout of the artwork is very interesting with a distinct line diagonal at around the 1/3 point and many shapes are featured such as circles and squares and rectangles and included is his own drawings. It is again very child-like as this is a reoccurring theme and the drawings look very congested in this painting suggesting that it was designed ti look very messy and crowded meaning that the intention was to make viewers take a while to look at the piece and focus their attention on the painting.

Jean Michel Basquiat uses a very childish style of art and as a result of this the heavy and sensitive topics being more digestible and the child-like style exaggerates the messages he tries to send by using connotations of children who are perceived as innocent and their view on the world is very basic and simple and their wisdom differs from people of older ages due to the simplistic view on the world. I like the use of colour and irregular lines and shapes to create a very disorganised effect and the words written not in a straight line and in a messy font that is still readable but still messy enough to support the disorganised and chaotic impression from his paintings. I feel like some of the components in his painting can be used in may own work and his art style could inspire more contemporary ideas and concepts.

Research for Project Proposal

Unit 1 Final Pieces

I feel that this was my first project as it is very clear by the amount of research and the final result being very basic and there not being much thought into the final piece as this was my trial period of me trying out different things and getting to grips with the whole process of doing research and pre-production as well as the production process and the evaluation process which sums up the project cycle. The final result was the best I could do at the time as a new student who was still figuring things out and working out the best ways to create my future projects.

This was my first attempt at written media and i feel that it was a good trial project to execute and realise tat written media creation was my weak point and is something that i realised would be something i would need to improve on the side while choosing visual projects for my projects as that is my stronger point and the quality of the final production would be stronger and more research and experimentation driven that that of written work.

Unit 3 Final Piece

This project was the first project that was done very well and the result was very well done and I feel one of the reasons is that because I have experimented with photography before and gained  knowledge previously from past projects and lessons I was more knowledgeable and understood how to create a good piece of media with a lot of content behind the final product and research which allowed different routes to explore and discover to find elements I wanted to implement and different formats and ideas along with more experience with the camera and ways the camera can be used regarding the different shots and settings with he supported further photoshop skill learnt by practice using the software.

I decided to base my FMP on DID because it is a topic that I felt like it is an interesting concept that is heavily focused on but still grabs interest and it certainly grabbed my interest in a way that I was curious to find out more abut the disorder and I wanted to present many personalities in one body using interesting angles and lighting and in a way avenge the representation in media and represent the disorder respectfully and in a way that it is not presented In a way which people with DID will disagree with and be angered and offended by.

Split Personality (Dissociative Identity Disorder) (DID)

DID is commonly known as split personality and is a disorder in which a person has multiple distinct personalities in which a person 'switches' between the multiple personalities with the effects of the conditions being memory loss, delusions or depression. These are the most common and frequent effects of the condition with more discreet effects being more prevalent alcohol and drug use, increased risk of suicide and self-harming in any way and impairments to relationships. The cause of DID is sexual and physical abuse as a child or a response to a natural disaster or a traumatic event as a way to distance and detach themselves from the trauma.

Someone can have up to 100 'alters' which are the personalities that the person can switch between with the 'core' personality being the main personality. There is no limit to the 'Alters' with the possibility of them being different genders, ethnicities, interests and the way they react with the environment and can have different backstories.

There is no definite cure to DID but there are ways of treating the disorder by identifying and working through past trauma, managing behavioural changes, merging separate identities into a single identity and avoiding the triggers that trigger 'switches'. DID is very uncommon and effects 0.1% to 1% of the population so the amount of sufferers of DID is very low.

Representation in Media

Split (M.Night Shyamalan, 2016)

This movie follows the a character called Kevin Wendall Crumb who has 23 alters and suffers from DID who kidnaps three teenagers and the three kidnaps teenagers must survive and figure out the different alters before the 24th personality is released as the 24th personality is named 'The Beast' and is vey dangerous.

Kevin's alters that are shown in the movie are

Hedwig

Barry

Dennis

Patricia

Jade

Orwell

The Beast

and the core personality is

Kevin Wendell Crumb

Out of the 23 alters in the movie I have only mentioned the personalities that are acted out by James McAvoy but I have a full list which is sourced from computer files in the film and the personalities that are not mentioned are named

Heinrich
Mary Reynolds
Norma
Goddard
Bernice
Polly
Luke
Rakel
Felicia
Ansel
Jelin
Kat
B.T
Samuel
Ian
Mr Pritchard

The movie focuses on the different personalities Kevin has created and take the time to show the viewer the different personalities and traits of each of the personalities as well as how each personality reacts to different situations and the different morals and beliefs. The personalities in the movie seem like they are aware of each other and are aware that each personality has different reaction to changes that one personality makes in terms of moving objects and causing a change in situations that cause physical differences to the environment and any harm caused to the kidnapped teens because if one personality is 'active' and takes control of the body the other personalities are unaware of what happens at that exact time but they can recognise changes that cause physical marks and changes when the specific personality is switched to.

There are cases of one personality protecting other personalities and different personalities having different opinions to the other personalities meaning that you can argue that the body of Kevin Wendell Crumb is compared to a place of residence for all the personalities and I mean this in a literal way that the body of Kevin is where all the personalities are situated but the dynamic between the personalities is the same as a home where a group of people live.

One thing I noticed when watching the movie is the physical transformation when 'The Beast' forces his way out to the body which is the way I would best describe it is that he becomes significantly stronger and in one scene where he gets shot with a shotgun this only slows him down as he gets back up and I feel this may be because the brain thinks and is convinced that in that moment they are the beast and the beast is driven on anger to harm other people so they also suffer and punish the people who have not suffered and is very determined to achieve his goals and is so determined that he is able to brush violent attacks off and move on. In this scene The Beast pulls two bars on cage which are every strong and he is struggling as blood is coming out of his mouth portraying the struggle to pull the two bars of the cage and further shows the determination as he is putting the body of the core personality at risk even though as the audience and The Beast knows that he will be fine it will not effect him too much. I wonder if this is the body getting stronger and the brain sending messages to the body to toughen up or if it is strength that Kevin already has.

After watching this video by the the YouTube channel Padilla, A., 2020. I spent a day with MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES (Dissociative Identity Disorder). [video] Available at: <https://youtu.be/ek7JK6pattE> [Accessed 29 April 2022] the people who had DID expressed their opinions on the film and they were mainly negative and one point that was mentioned was that the film makes people with DID seam very scary and gave a very negative image about alters and in one case stated by one of the people who had the disorder being interviewed they were out with a friend and when they said that the host at the time (Chloe) was 'feeling switchy' and the friend reacted in a way that they asked if they needed to be away from them as they thought that the alter was going t o be a murderer or harmful to them. Another person with the disorder who was being interviewed said they found it offensive along with another person being interviewed saying that the situation presented is very extreme and they do not like the way the disorder is represented.

What I have learnt from my analysis that there are many examples of DID being mislabelled in media and being portrayed as negative and I have very briefly researched the methods of presenting the disorder in a way that it shouldn't be represented and one of the routes that film and TV decide to take that to show the disorder in a very harmful manner affecting the overall general stigma of DID and my ideas have been supported by this analysis by alerting me to a route I can take my ideas that I shouldn't take for ethical purposes regarding upsetting people with DID and giving them a bad image. A positive thing I was inspired by is the range of characteristics of the alters and the range of differences between the alters and how they can even have different genders and sexualities along with the minor differences. Through studying this I was made aware to ensure that the alter s can have extreme differences and I will use the major differences as well as the minor differences.

Phycho (1960)

This movie follows Marion Crane who is a Phoenix secretary who embezzles $40,000 and goes on the run and while she is on the run she comes across a hotel in Fairvale, California which is run by Norman Bates.

The character of Norman Bates suffers from DID as a result from emotional abuse from his mother when he as a child. His mother taught him that sex was a sin and that other women were whores. As a result of this he ends up having an alter of his mother who ends up being a very dangerous and murderous and I think that the final scene of the film in which the alter who is based on Norman Bates mother is speaking to him directly in his head is further proof that he suffers from DID as a personality can be further or closer to the front which is the body and can be names whatever the person who has the disorder wants it to be called and in this case Norman is in the front and the alter is not fronted yet. I am using the term fronted as I am using this word to explain the personality gaining control of the body but this is not the only word that can be used to explain a personality taking control of the body.

Shutter Island (2010)

The main character in the film is Andrew Leaddis who is a U.S. Marshall investigating a missing patient in Ashecliffe Hospital supposedly but it is revealed at the end that his real name is Andrew Leaddis and his is actually a patient at the hospital who creates the fake persona of 'Teddy' to avoid facing up to the tragic death of his kids who were killed by his wife and he shot his wife as a result. This a repeated cycle that occurs again and again and it is stated in the film that he has been through the cycle of believing he is Teddy and investigating the missing patient and finding out the truth about his tragic past and returning to the belief that he is Teddy and he is investigating the missing patient.

His partner Chuck who plays along into his fantasy is revealed to be his doctor the whole time and he was watching over him the whole time in the end when the truth is revealed in the end by Dr John Cawley it is a shock because he 'dies' a few minutes earlier playing into Andrews fantasy. There is an essential clue that Chuck or as he is actually named Dr Lester Sheehan  is playing along to his fantasy and this is his disability to remove the gun from the holster when he and Teddy are instructed to hand over their guns to enter the facility as he is experienced in another field and isn't an U.S. Marshall. Another very minor clue is when a patient gets irritated by Teddy scratching his notebook and this causes a physical interaction between the two in which Chuck pulls Teddy back and motions the guard to take the patient back to his ward.

There are many hidden clues in the film that hint at the climax of the film and throughout the film we see the treatment Teddy is undergoing is actually working by having him show signs of progression with one being his fear of water slowly becoming weaker as he gets closer to the truth and this is indicated by having Teddy vomit and being seasick when he is on the boat and at the end where he swims in the water divide between the land and the building in which the truth is revealed to Andrew Leaddis.

Although the disorder presented in the movie is not DID and is Delusional Disorder I feel that there are many similarities between the two disorders to the point that when choosing which sources to research I mistook the disorder in the film as DID which may have been because I haven't heard of Delusional Disorder before and was unsure what it was and in hindsight when someone is unaware of what Delusional Disorder it is easy to mistake the disorder for DID as DID is the closest thing to the symptoms in the film. Also due to the fact that DID is a very popular topic regarding it being the time for many pieces of media and Delusional Disorder not being touched upon much at all. The similarities between the two are very similar and the film in my personal opinion makes the disorder seam like DID by honing in on the symptoms of DID even though the disorder is Delusion Disorder.

UNIT 1 AND 3: REVIEW OF PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENT

Use this space to outline your progression through Unit 1 and 3. Identify what you have discovered, learnt and developed throughout these two Units. You may, for example, DESCRIBE the new knowledge have you gained and EXPLAIN how it has impacted on your developing practice or you may DISCUSS the work you have made and EXPLAIN how you have developed as a Media Maker. Conclude by establishing three SMART Targets for your holistic development throughout Unit 4.

I am looking to improve on my variety of photography types used and use a wider range of variety of photography types in a single project and I would like to learn when each type is necessary and expand on my knowledge of the different types of photography learnt during unit 3.

I am also looking at branching out to different aesthetics and exploring different styles as I have explored many different aesthetics, but I would like to focus on a more positive style and theme as I have focused on very dark and rebellious themes previously.

PROJECT CONCEPT

DESCRIBE the Project you anticipate on making during Unit 4. Be explicit about aspects such as Platform, Form, Narrative and Duration. IDENTIFY any special equipment, processes or practices you anticipate on using. DISCUSS the subtextual elements and how they seek to communicate a meaning within your proposed project.

The concept for my project is DID which stands for Dissociative Identity Disorder and is commonly known as Split Personality and I will be creating a series of photographs which present the disorder in a manner in which the disorder can be understood easily and people can get a very vague and basic idea of the effects of the disorder and what happens to the victims of the disorder in terms of ‘switching’ which is the process that occurs when someone with the disorder is ‘switching’ to a different identity. I want to show multiple ‘Alters’ which are the secondary identities while presenting the ‘Core’ personality as the main identity of the victim which will be shown with the use of real people who do not suffer from the disorder but will play people that do suffer from the disorder. I want to present these people using photography in many different ways with one being photographing the model in different positions and them having different movements and combining the different positions and variations of a pose as ghost like figures which will look very transparent stemming from the non-transparent layer which has the photo of the model in the main position with other photos in varied positions being layered on top of each other to show how one person can have many people inside them as different personalities. I will also do this process but compile a bunch of photographs as the same model all placed in the same photo with the ‘Core’ personality having them all on a leash and them trying to escape the leash and having some that have escaped the leash to present the struggles od managing all the identities if the condition is extreme and there are many personalities which are hard to manage. The leash will be a animal leash or a baby leash which because animals and babies are typically viewed as hard to look after and they need the sacrifice of time and effort to look after and manage and this in a way describes how time and effort is needed to treat DID and the many different identities that a sufferer can have ranging from one ‘Alter’ to many different alters.

APPROACH TO CRITICAL EVALUATION

EXPLAIN your approach to critically evaluating your artistic and professional development, the complete Project and your ongoing learning. You may wish to consider this is relation to your SMART Targets.

I will be tracking my progress by making weekly notes in my reflective diary which would be sway in this case and I will be using this to keep track of my problems and successes as well as overall progress that week.

EXTENDED PROJECT PROPOSAL

TARGET AUDIENCE DESCRIPTOR

DESCRIBE the Target Audience for you Proposed Project: IDENTIFY their age and NRS Class before EXPLAINING how the anticipated project will be suitable for their consumption.

The age group I am targeting is 18-30 with knowledge and awareness of what DID is and the effects of the disorder and there are no gender, class, race etc. I decided to choose this target audience because I wanted to focus the audience on people who were mature enough to deal with the disorder in a mature manner and in a sensitive manner and additionally this age group already have a very basic idea of what the disorder is and the effects of the disorder. Also I feel that although any age people can enjoy photography I feel that he younger generation will understand the work more as mental heath problems are significantly more common nowadays but I feel that the older generation might include some people in the phycology field and this theme might interest them which is why I included a small section of older people in their 20s and 30 year olds. The decision to include a small percentage of the older generation is because I wanted to keep the age group precise so the content cdid not end up being too confusing because I attempted to target the content at too many ages and I prioritised younger people because i felt that they could relate ealily and this was more important in showing the disorder in an informative manner over grabbing the interest of experienced people who work in phycology and in subjects around the brain and the way the brain works as these people would be interested but not informed as thy are very experienced already.

CONSIDERATION OF ETHICAL DIMENSIONS AND IMPACT*

DESCRIBE the Ethical Dimensions and IMPACT of your Proposed Project: what Morals and Values might the Project communicate to the Target Audience? What behaviours will be exhibited within the work? What impact will it have upon the Target Audience – for example will violence and/or expletives be used? Why? Will it be glorified or condoned? What Moral dimensions does such content bring to the Proposed Project?

My project is based on a very sensitive topic that needs to be portrayed in a respectable manner and in a way that it does not appear that I am purposely trying to make fun of and ridicule the disorder in any way and I will make this very clear before presenting and showing my work. I need to do this because this is a very serious disorder that affects a very small minority of people in a very negative way.

I will also need to make it clear that the model in my photos does not suffer form the disorder and make it clear that they are only acting out a character with the disorder to avoid any hate and negative comments aimed towards the model for any misinterpretations and bad representation I unconsciously add into my photos and I will also make it clear that it was me who gave them the instructions and I am to blame.

I will be include some imagery that may make some viewers uncomfortable and uneasy and contents that may be very extreme and to overcome this I will give warnings and if a viewer is uncomfortable with the content they are seeing to the extent that they have a phobia or trauma I will not force them to view the content and I will allow them to take their time to make themselves comfortable with the photos.

Detailed description of the production:

I will be taking pictures of my sister in front of different mirrors getting different angles and shots and I will be using different props for different shot such as different kinds of mirrors an photographs. The mirrors will act as a method of layering a shot in the same position but with the model having a different facial expression, in a different position/pose. The photos will act as memories of different alters and it will be layed out like a thought bubble showing it is in their head.

Treatment

My concept is a series of photographs which show DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) in a very informative manner while also showing sufferers need proper treatment for their disorder and I wanted to use the negative impression the media put son DID and how this negative representation from medias has given DID negative connotation and I used this as a guide for what not to do while keeping the elements that media use to present DID in an accurate manner or in a positive manner and I wanted to take inspiration from positive representations of DID from media. The photographs will feature the use of mirrors and photographs to show multiple different people or one person in multiple different states and the photographs that do not involve people I will base the theme around different variation of something to represent the differences in alters and how the differences can be very major but also representing how the differences can be minor as well.

The obvious themes in my photographs will be DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder and the effects and way DID effects someone's life and I will present these elements visually using my photos. Another theme that will emerge is the use of mirrors and more specifically reflections of the model to show them more than once in the same photo without the use of photoshop. The reflection will represent multiple versions of a single person which is an emerging them that I subtly hinted at and the multiple people will be presented by using a completely different reflection of a different person or I will use a more minor method of simply having the model situate a different expression or clothes to show the difference. I will also use photographs which will contain images of me and people I am related to in different times in our lives and themes of emotion will occur due to the different photos creating emotion by showing a happy moment which would lead the audience feeling happy etc. so essentially based on the emotion the photo is expressing.

I want the style to be very grounded and authentic so I will stray away from fantastical elements such as oversaturation, vignettes and extremally bright colours. I will opt for very neutral colours and use just enough colour but not enough that it becomes very playful and the vibe shifts from serious and grounded to fun and positive as when you have a bunch of very bright colours paired together it creates a very childish connotation connections in the viewers mind. On the contrary to this I want to us every surreal imagery to contrast the neutral colour scheme and to represent how DID is very complex and is very different to what is considered 'normal' but I will not go as far as taking the surrealism past the imagery and props and the positioning of the model.

My intended audience is 18-30 with no restrictions on race, gender, sexuality but there is the specific audience of medical professionals being targeted as i feel that they will have in an interest in the photography as they work in an area which is very relatable to mental disorders with some medical professionals working closer to phycology and mental disorders than others.

I need to be careful when covering the topic of DID as it is a very sensitive and it is very easy to make a decision which will eventually lead to offending people with DID and even worst it can spread negative connotations about the disorder and people who suffer from the disorder which is already a hot topic as DID representation is media is very negative and present people with DID in an negative manner and there are very little media presenting DID for what it really is meaning that there is not enough positive representation to counter the negative representations in other media. I also need to to make sure that my model is safe when shooting as I will be using mirrors and photographs and I need to be careful when handling the mirrors as I do not want to damage the mirror which could lead the sharp shard of glass which would cut and hurt the model if they are near the shards and a similar concept must be acknowledged with photos as that can have have sharp corners and poke the model and make them uncomfortable and in extreme cases the edges of the phots can give the model a papercut so I will be sure to make sure corners are nor in direct contact with the model and there is pace to the model to move without being poked. I will also need to get permission from all the people in the photos to be able to use their faces in the photos and this will be easy as I know al of them personally so i can ask them without having to set up a meeting. I will make sure the imagery used in my photos is considerate and i am being careful top not use any offensive imagery that may offend anyone in any way and will be considerate of the content I feature in my photos.

DisociaDID

DisociaDID is a YouTube channel which focuses on DID from someone who has the disorder, they refer to themselves as a collective group of people with DID. Their videos feature the alters in which the content is very educational and informative and features switching live on camera between different alters and videos dedicated on meeting different alters etc.

This video mainly focuses on how the alters communicate in the system and I am using the term system as this is what the host and alters feel comfortable in calling themselves and I learnt in this video that the system uses a buddy system which consists of each alter having a buddy or two and when a message needs to be passed on this is what the system that would ensure the message is passed on would look like

I used Canva to create this diagram and when I was creating this diagram I did not add any secondary 'buddies' as there would need to be more arrows and I would not be able to fit all the text boxes on the page and when I was creating this diagram I was using the diagram in the thumbnail to create the decisions for my diagram as I feel that if I followed the diagram that is created by the user with the system then the diagram would be accurate.

In this video the host at the time who was Chloe discusses positive triggers and why they are different to negative triggers and she continues to explain why just because positive triggers exist this does not mean that the personalities can be switched to for convenience and they personality may not become closer to the body and front so it is not guaranteed. In the the video a switch is shown as example of how a positive trigger brings out a personality and before this it is explained that positive triggers can be used to bring out personalities to the front that do not want to be fronted and this is considered as a abuse and positive trigger should only be used with permission from the alter and the host in situations in which it is required for. The personality that is switched to is Kyle who at the time was the primary protector and the host at the time uses a Bastille song as a positive trigger for Kyle was Bastille songs with one in particular and the full process of the switch is shown on camera.

This research is very interesting because it shows a real life example of someone who had the disorder and the experiences they have to go through specifically how they dissociate what triggers are and the types of triggers and how every personality in the system has a certain role in the system with there being live dissociation on camera the audience can gain a realistic idea of what dissociating is like for a person with DID. I will apply the knowledge gained from this source into my photos by using the realistic representations and I will respect people wit the disorder by giving them an realistic image that differs from the negative connotation given to the disorder by the media.

I created a mood board of many photographs that are themed around DID and i decided that instead of doing a very generic photoshoot and take photos that use formats and layouts that are done very commonly I wanted to make my photos unique and research different example that I could follow to make my photos unique and different so the audience don't get the impression that it my photos will be like the others on the topic and thought was put into photographing them in a unique way and editing the photos to be different and to present the disorder in a unique way.

When researching DID photography
the most common example of the format for existing DID photography was ghost like figures stemming from a model with no opacity and because this is such a common format this the the format that I will definitely not be using due to this. Although it is a good way to show the disorder I feel that it is overdone and if I were to take my photographs like this there will be no interest from the viewers due to them already seeing this format over and over again already and as well as this this I feel that the editing process to achieve the final photos is very tedious as the layers would have to be very carefully layered and although this will test my editing skills and help me improve i feel it it not worth the result of photos that are extremely generic.

I want to use props in this project so when researching I considered every type of photo examples but favoured the ones that used props for example photographs and polaroids, mirrors and masks etc. I feel using props would add the element of individuality to my photos and make it stand out as unique.

Target Audience Research

I have categorised the ways that photography can be presented in 2 groups, Online (digital) and physically:

Online (Digital)

There are many ways to present Photography pieces Online with the most common ones listed below:

Shutterstock

Stocksy
Can Stock Photo
Adobe Stock
Twenty20
Depositphotos
Dreamstime
EyeEm

Pixieset

These sites are very good for selling photography work and making an online business with your photos

SquareSpace
500px
SmugMug
Zenfolio
Format
Photoshelter
Flickr
Instagram
Pintrest

These sites are good for creating portfolios and presenting photography work.

Some of the websites are both useful for both selling and some are good for presenting for the simple reason the developers of the website created the website for either selling or presenting and the website could have been slowly adapted into a website which serves the purpose of selling and presenting. An additional bonus when selling is that you are simultaneously presenting at the same time because the photography work on display is viewed by and exposed to so in a way it is also presenting and selling at the same time. This excludes auctions for work in which the produce would fully be leaning to the selling element.

Digital portfolios are useful when a person wants to achieve a wider spread as a portfolio on the internet is able to get to so many places in a very little amount of time and be shown simultaneously to many systems. You can also create databases based on information provided from the digital portfolio to reach out to interested people who could be potential clients. it is also more interactive and can be adjusted easily and components can be moved for easy changes and GIF format is supported by digital portfolios so GIFs can be incorporated into a digital portfolio. This is additionally a cost-effective alternative to physical portfolios that need to be printed which would cost the photographer and it would save creating a physical billboard.

Physically

Photography can be physically shown by:

portfolio (non-digital)
exhibition
Photography studio
Gallery

When photos are presented physically it gives off a more professional impression due to the fact that it is presented in an old fashioned manner which requires more effort and mistakes while physically presenting work are not taken lightly as it will always have an effect and have a drawback as a result so it shows dedication to fail and recover and experience if the process of printing is perfectly executed by the photographer. It also elevates the piece as it is presented like a fine piece of art which is well respected and admired.

In some situations having the work in physical form is the most appropriate for example an galleries in which it will be hung up on wall which would need to be physical and printed as it needs to be hung up on a wall on display an this would not be possible in digital format.

Having photography work in a physical for all feels more exclusive because its as if the photographer is intending for it to be chased after and having people go to a location to see it instead of it being delivered to the comfort of their homes on screens. An added exclusivity is the fact that it is required to wear outdoor clothing and change out of cosy pyjamas and home clothes making the photography pieces more exquisite as it is part of the artwork that gets people to the work.

I feel like digital portfolios are easier to grow and it is easier for viewers to come across as it can be exposed in many ways with one example being Instagram ads which are very easy to come across as millions of people scroll on Instagram daily and there is always a user scrolling through stories or posts and this is the most prominent example along with YouTube adverts which as I explained earlier is bound to be seen at an inevitable level due to their being millions of users with there never being a time where there are no users.

The interviewees all shared an interest for visual media such as TV shows, film

Physical portfolios are used to present to employers and interviewers your work and to also present your work to a audience in a gallery or photography studio. In these situation a physical portfolio is better in my opinions as it appears more professional and is easier to view as it can be printed on very big pieces of paper and some people (mainly older people stereotypically) struggle to look at content on screens because it is shown on a digital screen which causes eyestrain from extensive viewing on screens whereas if it is shown on a canvas or physical form viewers can easily view the photo without risking eyestrain when honing in on details of the photo.

It is worth mentioning that medical experts and phycologists and people in similar fields would also be interested in the art as it is a topic that relates to these fields and would match interests as they are working in the field suggesting that there is some interest in the medical field and mental study field. This may exclude the people who don't have an interest but are still in these fields for whatever reason they have.

Focus Group results

I found out through the results of the focus group that social media would be the best way to promote the work if I was to attempt to reach the target audience of my work and there were mentions of adverts and exhibitions and this question helped narrow down the age group by informing me that the age group would be avid social media users who have different levels of how active they are on social media but regardless they will have some social media presence of some kind. Every person wrote down Social media as an answer and because exhibitions and adverts were mentioned once I feel that this would be a weak point to explore.

It is very clear from the answers to who the target audience think should be the target audience regarding class should be middle class and I agree with this as these people are typically viewed to be knowledgeable and typically upper-middle class are viewed as stuck-up and less welcome to new concepts with the possibility of them reacting negatively to the disorder and for context I will show a chart of the different classes underneath. I still want to stray away from the idea of sticking with a specific class as people with DID can come from all 5 classes and i do not want to exclude their chance to connect with the photography pieces because they are too high in class or two or too low in class.

I expected the interviewees to have vary modern interests but to my surprise there was a mix of modern interests that involved technology in some way and interest that did not involve technology and this widened my perspective om my impression of my target audience and took into account that I was thinking too stereotypically and some younger people in younger generations enjoy things that do not involve technology and this informed me that I did not have to completely modernise my photographs and could use old-fashioned props and settings.

The props I would like to use the most are:

Photographs

I had the idea of using different types of states for the polaroid's in terms of having differences from dirt and scratches and burns to some being cut into pieces and the opposite with minor cuts to show the differences between the photos as the photos would be photographs next to the subject and even though the photos will show the face of the subject each polaroid will represent a different personality and having these further differences will further support this. Additionally i feel that this would show aging for some polaroid's and age which which is what i want as a polaroid is one personality and some personalities are older and have been there for longer as personalities merge and when personalities merge the past personalities exist as a single personality.

I chose to use polaroid's because like many things that were popular before they most often become back into trend for example 'dad' shoes have come back in style and it considered trendy to wear and in this case polaroid's are the same because both these items are seen as retro and this attracts peoples attention because it is a switch up from items that are viewed as modern and there is the aspect of nostalgia which further encourages the return of items that were past trends. I also like the way the high noise concentration in polaroid photos present light in a very dramatic manner and can amplify bright lights while making darker areas darker at the same time.

Famous Artist who used polaroid's

Adams, A., 1979. Yosemite Falls. [image].

Evans, W., 1973. Abandoned House. [image].

Samaras, L., 1974. Photo-Transformation. [image].

Warhol, A., 1978. Andy Sneezing. [image].

Makos, C., n.d. Andy with SX-70 and Konica. [image].

1983. Untitled. [image].

These examples of existing polaroid photography use a very basic composition of having just simply the image which is effective if you want the attention to be on the content of the image and if you want it to be give off a simplistic impression. With this composition the image needs to be very good as the focus is on the image and the image needs to attract the viewers attention. There needs to be a clear indication that it is polaroid photography as well and this can be done by having a look that the film is developing and including a polaroid camera or a polaroid in the photo and this is needed if the photo does not feature the iconic polaroid border which is very thick. These photos feature phots with the border and without the border with clear indication that it is still polaroid photography

Hockney, D., 1982. Sun on the pool Los Angeles. [image].

Hockney, D., 1982. Still Life Blue Guitar. [image].

Hockney, D., 1982. Nicholas Wilder Studing Picasso. [image].

These are created by combining many different polaroid's together to make one piece and the constructed image can be made to look neat by having the image on each polaroid align neatly with the other images next to it and to create a messy look by having the images next to each other being aligned in a way that they are shifted slightly left and right and up and down. This is a very unique way of crating polaroid photography and is a good way to keep the classic style of polaroid photography while adding a little interesting twist on the polaroid photography piece.

Mirrors

I was interested in the idea of using mirrors because mirrors show the reflection of a person but someone with DID who has multiple people inside them only see one person in a single mirror which allows options to use multiple mirrors to show many reflections which would be the many personalities and the amount of mirrors used will be the amount of personalities the character will have. There are many photos that show this vision in a visual visual manner and this format is very common and the one that immediately came to me was in BTS, 2020, Black Swan, 4th March, BTS (방탄소년단) 'Black Swan' Official MV - YouTube, 2:31 (Accessed on 12.04.2022). Another way u can photographically present DID using mirrors is by having a broken mirror show the same face in the different shards in the mirror which is very effective because the mirror acts as a body and the shards are the different personalities similarly to polaroid idea and the way that the shards will be different sizes will match the fact that different personalities have different roles that can be minor or more major and the more major personalities manage the more minor ones in terms of the effect the personality has and the role the personality plays. The fact that the glass is broken can also be a metaphor for the effect that DID can have on someone's life and how their life can be hard with figuring out their DID and the shards oppose this by making up the whole mirror in this case the mirror is the 'body' of the person with DID.

I like how in this example the mirrors are placed in a way that his reflection is very curved and the mirrors follow the pattern of having two types of mirrors that follow a 1,2,1,2,1,2 pattern and even though this shot had no intention to be linked to DID at all and was used for a completely different meaning this shot can have many meaning depending on the perspective of the viewer. I also like how this shot differs by using a irregular pattern with the mirrors and two types of mirrors.

Guillaume Amat

Amat, G., n.d. Open Fields

I like how this series of photos show what is in front of the lens while using mirrors to show the scene behind the camera so the viewer is looking forwards and backwards simultaneously. Another thing to mention is how the photos are very interpretational and each person can interpret the photos in a different manner. The use of mirrors also frames the main subject or object drawing additional attention to the centre of the image and the mirror is placed perfectly in the centre following the rule of thirds.

Ziqian Liu

Liu, Z., n.d. Reflection Of The Inner World.

These are a few of her reflection photography pieces and instantly I love these photographs as the mirrors are arranged in very unique ways with the use of props to enhance the photographs very well eighth probes being carefully placed along with the mirror framing the model in creative ways the props overlapping the mirror at times. Aperture is also played with in the photos and it is clear that there is a range of aperture levels used for the reasons that the photographer has decided to do this. Judging from the photos I can easily tell that the photographer takes many photos with little adjustments because go how the final photos turn out so well in my opinion a mother possibility is the props are very carefully planned and set up along with the mirror.

masks

I had the idea of using masks in my photographs and the inspirations to use this idea came from masks in film and tv

This is the iconic 'Ghostface' mask that is worn by the killer in Scream (1996) Directed by Wes Craven [Film] Dimension Films but in the TV series a different mask was used which will be shown below:

The change of mask was done because the showrunners (Jill Blotevogel and Jamie Paglia)
wated to pay homage to the original while creating their own story at the same time so they decided to use a mask that was similar but had a different look and there was the secondary intention of using a mask that looked more menacing and scary and higher quality than a '$1.99 plastic mask' but in season 3 of the show the original mask was used.

The clear inspiration behind the original Ghostface mask is Munch, E (1893) The Scream, Nasjonalgalleriet, Oslo with the name of the painting supporting the observation of the inspiration behind the mask.

These masks are full face masks and for the sake of variety I will put down some of the masks that are only partially covering the face

What interests me about masks is the reasons why they are used and one reason they are used is to remain anonymous and there are many reasons someone might want to stay anonymous and one reason I want to cover is remaining anomynous to hide the crimes that one has committed and in the process the intention of living a double life as wearing a mask to hide identity when committing crimes means that the person or group does not want to be caught or connected to the crime so they would act in a surprised manner due to these circumstances and the contrary to this in which the mask wearer wears the mask to hide their good actions from the public in order to hide their true identities from the enemies who may use the knowledge of their true identity as a chance to hurt their family and friends and effect their life personally An example of both would be the robbers in Baby Driver (2017) Directed by Edgar Wright [Film] TriStar Pictures for the first intention mentioned of using the mask and for the second intention mentioned an example is Batman. Masks can also be major for branding and making a strong connection to a mask to something and from the example images of masks there are many examples and as a result of these masks becoming famous the need for Trademarks comes with the rising popularity of the mask and the most iconic masks are able to be recognised even when there are changes to the mask it can still be recognised. This being shown in the masks for Jason Vorhees, Micheal Myers and Ghostface.

I would preferable use the other two props as I feel that the use of masks is a very controversial method of presenting DID as it implies that the the person with DID can control which personality takes control and also creating an impression that people with DID use their disorder as a mental mask which linking back to what I said about physical masks in a previous paragraph states that the false impression of the person being able to fully control the personalities and use personalities to their advantage as this is false and although this is similar to positive triggers which can force personalities to take full control until another dissociation but this can simply just make the personality the trigger applies to closer the the 'front' and they may not even fully front. Additionally this is very uncomfortable for the body and can essentially force a personality who wants to stay in the head to front.

These photos are a result of a collaboration between the photography Inge Morath and cartoonist Saul Steinberg and they feature what appears to be paper bags that I would imagine would be brown with cartoon faces drawn on them. I think the hand-drawn faces have different meanings and present something but then at the same time like all media it can be interpretive but my personal take on the photos is that the masks are what they are expected to look like and the how they should be feeling based on if they are smiling or pulling a down or pulling a neutral face.

Moon Knight (2022) Disney+, 30th March 2022

On the topic of masks I thought of Moon knight and I wanted to give it its own section as not only does it use masks but the main character suffers from DID and I will cover the representation of DID but I wanted to talk about the use of masks and the overall outfits as the masks are part of sperate outfits.
One thing I liked about the outfits and masks is that Marc Spector and Steven Grant (based on the 3 episodes released so far on the date 17/04/2022 I have gathered that Marc Spector is the host as it is mentioned that Steven Grant came later into the mind) have different masks and outfits further establishing that they are different personalities sharing the same body. The different suits also show the roles on the body. There is some suggestions to other alters and there could be more alters in the future but right now with 3 episodes the confirmed alter is Steven Grant and Marc Spector is the host.

Costume for Steven Grant- Mr. Knight

Costume for Marc Spector- Moon Knight

Even though the costumes are different the abilities and powers that come with both costumes are exactly the same and there is no difference and the abilities and powers are provided by Khonshu. Mr Knights weapons are two baton which can be made into nun chucks and have a grappling hook feature as well as being able to be used as simple clubs while Moon knight   One thing to note would be that Marc is very experienced with his suit and can very easily summon his suit on and off and Grant is very new to the concept of being a avatar to the mischievous and banished god Khonshu who is the egyptian moon god but having the suit makes Grant significantly ore confident and this is what lead him to fighting a Jackal head on and defeating him with one punch. Having two costumes that correlate to to Spector and Grant simplifies who is in the costume for the viewer and it is made clear which costume belongs to who with Mr Knight being Steven and Moon Knight being Marc but this my change with future episodes if a new suit is introduced with a new personality.

Update

After watching the 3 episodes that released weekly after this research I wanted to add an update and discuss the final 3 episodes and the thing I wanted to talk about how the show managed to show how DID stems from abuse as a child and this was shown in a very considerate and respectful way and as a audience we can see how the personalities are created and as of now I am unsure to how accurate the creation of new personalities is but am happy that they showed it in the show regardless even and along with this we get the reasons the personalities were created which in this case was to escape the abuse from his mother and create a personality to escape to when things get too much and he needs an escape. I liked how throughout the episodes the journey to accepting himself (Marc Spector) and the other personality (Steven Grant) as one body and it is made clear that when the acceptance of the disorder and learning to embrace the other personality that they are happier and I like the fact that this part is shown as it is a positive representation of DID and that multiple personalities can live peacefully in one body and when I was talking about Marc Spector's alters I left out Jake Lockley the third alter and this is because both Steven and Marc are unaware of the alters existence and even though they question how they could have done some actions if it wasn't Steven Or Marc and it is suggested that they suspect there is a third alter at times but they never find out about Jake in the first season and Jake only shown twice one being recognisable if the viewer was watching carefully and the other one being very clear. Steven is unaware of Marc Spector's existence until Marc has a breakdown after the death of their Mum and their lives become intertwined and Steven Grant is made aware of Marc's exitance and when it is revealed Steven was created in Marc's head he has an emotional reaction and one thing I took from this is that the alters are essentially people even though they don't have their own physical body and this strengthens this and Steven comes to terms with this when Marc and Steven learn to live with each other and accept each other and learn that they need each other. There is a contrast in DID media in which people with DID represented as dangerous as even though Marc is used to kill people he feels remorse and does not want to kill and when the final battle is resolved the choice to not kill Arthur Harrow is a change from the negative representation and changes the representation to positive and this positive representation is enforced by the negative
representation of Jake Lockley being used by Khonshu as Marc was.

Khonshu

Khonshu is the egyptian god who was banished and is perceived as mischievous by the other gods and his avatar is Marc Spector who shares a body with Steven Grant and there are suggestions of other alters. He does not specifically have a a mask as the animal like skull is his head but I wanted to discuss it anyway and my thoughts on the skull. The skull is actually the skull of a bird and specifically a Falcon or Eagle and Khonshu features a staff with the crescent on the top. The use of the skull shows how old the god is as skulls correlate to ancient times and this creates connections to ancient times and the moon god himself ,Khonshu, in the viewers minds. The moon god Khonshu was an actual god in history and the decision to use a egyptian god that already existed in history adds an element to accuracy to the show in a show which features many fantasy elements in which is a good balance as fantasy has a lot of elements that are not real and unless the intention is to make a full fantasy world that is mean tot not be accurate then that is an exception but even in these cases it is good to add some reality so that that the fantasy elements can compare to the real elements and act as a method of exaggeration to exaggerate the fantasy elements and having the realistic setting of Egypt and London to compare to the fantasy elements of the Egyptian gods and the summoning of the suits and the abilities and powers the suits provides and the weapons that are accompanied by the suits.

These covers are interesting because they show all the alters and the host in a single image and as these are promotional covers they feature 3 different variations of the cover with the main focus being different in each cover meanwhile there is still focus on the other subjects in the covers by having them being transparent placed above the shoulder of the main subject. They have the layout of having many people in one shot with only one has no transparency and this is a very common layout for DID photography and is trusted and reliable as it is a way to clearly present DID in a very respectful and accurate manner.

I am using the website Ivanova, T. and >, M., 2022. 9 Impressive Mirror Photography Ideas to Try Yourself. [online] ExpertPhotography. Available at: <https://expertphotography.com/mirror-photography-ideas/> [Accessed 8 May 2022].  to find techniques to analyse

Use Artificial Light to enhance your models features

The advice for this is when working with low light using the camera setting to brighten up the shot and use artificial lighting and when photographing using artificial light make sure you manually change the colour temperature and ISO. It is further explained that colour temperature will fix unflattering tones and ISO will help take sharp photos in low light.

Use Manual Focus for the Sharpest Results

The writer is saying that when shooting in a very busy background and working with a busy foreground and background autofocus can focus on the wrong thing and not even focus at all and has a higher chance of happening when shooting with a low f-number which is where manual focus come in in allowing you to manually focus the camera on the subject. They also mention that the mirror used may cause distortion on the models face and are only noticeable when zooming in on a photo.

Create Small Space in rooms using Large Mirrors

If there is a small space to work with you can use a large mirror to take photos from a distance and is handy when you use a zoom lens which isn't typically used indoors. Using large mirrors to create m ore space between yourself and the model meaning the model wont have to worry about bumping into the camera.

Shoot Through Multiple Mirrors

The writer says you don't need amazing editing skills or props to create surreal photos and by using mirrors you can focus on the models face and reflect objects that wouldn't be visible otherwise with another mirror.

Take Photos of Yourself and Your Model at the same time

This can be used to create depth in a photo as well as adding content to use up space or make space depending on the photograph. This techniques should not be used too much as it can get very unoriginal after a few consecutive photos. An idea is to use a broken mirror in a self portrait photo to shoot a unique photo.

Take your mirror outdoors

The options are very big when taking a mirror outside and you can cover parts of a models body and show a landscape and and improve landscape photography skills. Using small mirrors outdoors will make it significantly easier and convenient.

Recreate Fun Road Trip Photos In A Car

Using a side mirror or rear view mirror to focus on the model by using the mirror to frame the model while showing a beautiful landscape in the background. This will add dimension and a sense of adventure.

Take Atmospheric Self Portraits

You can self-portraits interesting by using objects around the mirror creating an atmosphere and this can be achieved by the pose of the photographer as well as the objects and both of these together can create a certain atmosphere that the photographer is trying to achieve.

Use a Small Mirror to Create Abstract Portraits

Using a handheld mirror or prism to experiment with different photo outcomes and using the prism to make reflections distorted. You will have to focus very closely to get good results. A handheld mirror will more of the subjects face and make it easier to focus on the model.

With the shots I drew out I used many inspirations that found interesting and would work in context and I wanted them be very different from each other and wanted each photo to be very refreshing so when the audience are looking at each photograph they don't lose interest as there will be fresh imagery and concepts with every shot. If there was a photo that is very unclear I will use a different angle of the same shot to further explain the shot further.

When shooting using mirrors I had a cleaning spray and cloth ready to clean the mirrors and make sure that the mirrors were as clear as they could be for the shots.

Contact Sheet for Test Shots

I like the lighting in this photograph and I like the way the model is positioned as the face is catches the light in a way that it is satisfying the the viewer and they face the model is pulling is very neutral and is not leaning toward a happy expression or a sad expression so it can apple to more photographs as the meaning is more universal.

The thing I like most about this photograph is the way the model is staring right at the camera and forcing us to feel how they are feeling as the eyes of the viewer and the model meet and it it almost like the model is looking at the audience and showing them how they are
feeling.

I like this photograph because the three mirrors are representative of 3 personalities and it opens up the option of editing different shots with the same static shot but with different facial expressions into each mirror so it is made clear that the mirrors represent 3 different personalities.

I like the way the walls act as leading lines and create this very interesting composition of 3 triangles. Also I like the way the model is looking at the natural light source as it represents hope for happier things due to the connotation of smiling and the smile makes the bright light seem positive as a white bright light can be perceived as hope or something with a darker tone in terms of theme.

Bern, K., 2017. Hiding Reflections in Mirrors. [video] Available at: <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueBzaWy6UWM> [Accessed 12 May 2022].

In this video the editor uses the section tool firstly to highlight the are of the camera

After that they use the smudge tool to smudge out the camera and keep the grey wall

The editor also shows another way you can but out the camera by using gradient. He uses two very similar shades of the grey colour on the wall to match the dark areas on the wall that are less lit.

This is what the wall will look like in the photograph after the gradient is applied. The editor smoothens out the rough edges but not very well so what I would do differently is smoothen the edge on the top out so the fade looks natural and not artificial.

Test Edits

This is the photograph before I have done any sort of editing to remove the tripod and the person taking the photograph in the background.

I used the polygonal Lasso Tool to highlight the area I wanted to use the Spot Healing Brush tool on to remove the tripod.

This is what the area looked lie when I was done removing the tripod and I was not happy with how it looked and I would need to touch up on the area to make it blend naturally and to remove any wavy lines its given to strait lines in the image.

I did the same thing with the little of visible tripod that can be seen above the left shoulder and I touched up on it as it was very clear that there was rough lines on the shoulder and used the Spot Healing Brush to not only make the lines smoother but t blend the wall in to the selected area better.

I did the same thing with the small area on the other shoulder to remove the dress of the person taking the photo.

There was a little mark on the wall tat I thought was quite distracting so decide to use thew Spot Healing Brush to remove the mark.

I wanted to liven up the image so I decided to play around with some of the levels of saturation, brightness, contrast etc.

After adjusting the levels I found the levels that worked well for the photograph and livened up the photograph. I would turn down the saturation a little as I feel it was a tab bit too much but other than that I like the higher vibrance.

Evaluation

1.     When doing my proposal I wanted it to be realistic and achievable and use my photos to present the disorder in an informative manner. The difference between presenting it in an educational manner and informative manner is that if I was to present in an educational manner than it would be even more difficult to have meaning as informative presentation would mean that I would have to only provide information through meaning in my photos while educational manner would require me to provide the information and further empower and transform and seeing as it would be difficult as it is already to make the photo clearly about DID. I feel that I did expand on the points I wanted to improve on from unit 3 and I did this by experimenting with different photography types, and it is very clear in the final photos and there is a wider range of different photography types such as mirror photography and portrait photography and I feel like I used every photography type when it was necessary and in the right situations to portray the meaning it needed to portray.

2.     In terms of my research, I think I researched very relevant topics and concepts that opened new options and elevated my ideas and pieces. My research on media that focuses on DID helped me decide on methods I could use to represent the disorder in a positive and respectful manner and what I should not do by researching media that represents DID negatively. I also looked at how the disorder was represented in terms of accuracy in DID media and how accurate the media depicts how the disorder affects a person and how dissociating and the way the different personalities in body function so I could use this research to ensure I represent people with the disorder in an accurate manner. I further researched positive representations for the same reasons. Researching existing photography based on specific elements I wanted to include in my photographs opened options for more ways I can experiment with different paths that would lead to different results as well as finding new inspirations to further research. I would say that I needed to do more research and when I found something interesting or an aspect worth researching further, I wish I researched it to the point where I feel that there is no relevant content related to the aspect I could research further.  This would have lead to me having more knowledge on camera techniques which would be beneficial to elevating my photographs and Photoshop being significantly easier to use. As well as knowing more about DID as a whole and the representation of DID.

3.     I have used the Photoshop skills that I developed through unit 1 and unit 3 to edit the photos and due to the fact that I have needed to use Photoshop for 3 projects this has forced me to use the software a lot.  Through the consecutive use of Photoshop this has allowed me to play around with the software and come across problems in which has allowed me to find out the solutions to common problems in photoshop for example when I needed to remove the tripod and camera from a reflection I was able to remove them from the photo and make it look like it was never there during the photoshoot. . Also from simply doing the project in Unit 1 and unit 3 is the ability to execute a good photoshoot and choosing when to take the photos. This is key when shooting with a model as you want to ensure that the model or models are free and this can be achieved by communication and communicating.  This is beneficial because everyone involved in the production is aware that there is a photoshoot happening and a time is agreed on and the crew and cast clear their schedules ready for the photoshoot. It Is important to make sure that enough time is cleared on the crew and cast schedules so that a rush-free photoshoot can take place and great shots can be taken. I have developed the skill to recover from problems I come across and come up with the best solution based the severity of the problem.

4.     I faced the problem of not knowing what I wanted to base my FMP on and the way I tackled this issue by putting down ideas on my sketchbook and seeing where my thought process went and putting down ideas and notes along with the idea until I thought of DID.  I found it really interesting and something that I wanted t know more about and see if people with DID were like how they are portrayed in media. You can create very compelling narratives with the concept of DID and I wanted to jump onto this opportunity however later on into the project I fell out of love of the idea and wanted to change my concept but then I decided to stick with the idea as I had already heavily researched the topic and had some great ideas invested into the concept. As well as this I feel that my other ideas  such as a giant who becomes a lonely child's friend or how the fashion industry can be very toxic but I felt these concepts didn’t translate well in photography format and would work better in another format. Another problem I had was conveying the meaning in my photos and I struggled to find imagery that clearly presented DID and I feel that I sketched up with imagery that would give me 12 different shots that are different from each other and show the disorder in some way with some being very clear and some being very ambiguous which is a problem because I wanted my photos to clarly show DID so it can be informative.

5.     I managed my planning well as I learnt from past projects in which I was working quite close to the deadline so I made sure I created a plan and stuck with it which required self-discipline to work when I didn’t feel like working on the FMP. I planned when I was going to do everything very well in my opinion and at times I found myself behind but I would work hard to get myself back to the point in which I was not behind. I was given an extension due to the fact that I was ill for a week at the beginning of the project  and so far I am meeting all my deadlines and overall I feel I have managed my time well and used my time wisely as well and whenever I have had time to I have been working on my FMP. In terms of pre-production it helped me realise the final product by making me find the best locations to shoot my photos based on the amount of hazards so I could make sure the model was safe and would not be harmed in the process of shooting, also I made sure that the pre-production was completed on time and was done to the bet of standards so my photoshoot was reported in detail and it was clear where I was shooting and the time.

6.     I feel like it was important for me to reflect on my work as it means I can spot any weak spots that I need to work on and what went well and this would help with any future productions as I know what to work on and what I can already do well. I used peer-feedback from my classmates and people in the target audience to gain feedback from a secondary perspective that is not mine as I might be bias as there might be something that I feel is good but can be improved as well as things I might have missed which other people can pick up on. I have developed my photography skills throughout this project with the experimentation of angles and lighting etc. and have learned how to use the camera  efficiently in terms of settings and how the camera functions as well as which zoom works best for a certain shot and which f-stop and ISO to use to create the bet possible shots. I also used Sway reflective diary to reflect on my progress and my thoughts of the work I did that week for the project.

7.     The final product could have been stronger to be honest as I feel only a few photos very clearly show DID and the other only implying and even if they are implied there are other things that are implied at the same time so this make it even more difficult to find the true meaning of DID. Another thing I wanted to mention was that I liked the shots I took in the photoshoot but I feel with stronger Photoshop skills I could've created better photos but I cannot fault that as I have already progressed a lot on my photoshop journey and learn a significant amount about photoshop and am at the point where. Can say that I am pretty good at photoshop and know many of the tools in the software and what they do. I feel that the photos that did clearly show DID were well edited and look really good as well as being a good representation of the disorder in a way that it is portrayed as people that need help and positive in a way that they are not how they are represented in existing DID media. It does appeal to the target audience and this is supported by the audience feedback results in which they support my point of it appealing to the target audience because the content requires you to be aware of the disorder to understand the photos in full detail and the target audience are at the age they are mature enough to view DID media good and bad and be comfortable with the information based on the fact that everyone said the photos appealed to the target audience and that is appropriate for the audience as well.
