What do you visualise?

When I read and listen to the extract I visualise a woman siting in front of a wall and observing the wall and she slowly loses her mind imagining a woman inside the walls.

What is the mood/atmosphere of the extract?

The general mood the extract is very mysterious and wondering what is going on and why the wall is being focused on so much and slushily unnerving the way the wall is described and how the story takes an unexpected turn.

List sounds that you would associate with the content of the narrative.

Alfred Wallis

Biography + Keywords

Alfred Wallis was a Cornish fisherman and artist and had a rough upbringing and journey with his mother dying when e was young and having to work from a very young age due to extreme poverty. When he was at sea he very briefly taught himself to read and write and he began painting in 1925 with no apparent reason and spontaneously started painting due to loneliness and boredom. He never aspired to labelled as a painter and kept his distance from galleries and painter groups and often stated 'I am not a real painter'.

Alfred painted using scrap materials he found around his house and spare bits of boat paint on his kitchen table in his home in St Ives as he didn't have much money.

'The Blue Ship'

This painting has a very heavy usage of blue in three different shades with the lightest shade being the land and the water being darker but not as dark as the sky which is dark blue with black mixed in with a similar thing happening with the lighter two shades of blue with the white mixed in making a colour lighter and darker depending on if black or white is used to be mixed in. The comparison between how accurate the boat is and the two tall buildings shows how much time he spent on a boat also shown by the amount of detail on the boat while there is a lighthouse litterly floating off the land.

'St Ives'

This painting is painted at a birds-eye angle giving it a map-like appearance that is used to describe many Wallis works for the reason that at this angle all the contents of the paining can be viewed and many building can be painted with the whole of the building being shown. The individual isolation of the twin houses at the bottom of the painting focuses our attention for the reason of there not being any building around it to distract us from the twin buildings and us wondering why the buildings are so far away from the other buildings.

I drew a picture describing how the sea is vast , wide and a dangerous space with elements I added in that reflect the dangerous elements of the sea.

'Voyage to Labrador'

This painting shows a boat in what would appear to be sand but it it actually supposed to be water because the boat is traveling through it and the hills in the background of the painting look like icebergs with the stream of water being shown to be continuing in the right hand corner of the paining. The fact that the colours used are the colours that are not typically used for the water and the mountains shows that the memory is very weak and he could not remember the full picture in his head of the scene but also could be done for many other reasons with one being that Wallis is trying to show that the water was very dirty explaining the colour of the water or the boat has stopped and they are at land. I think this painting is showing a journey through something to get somewhere.

Alfred Wallis was a Cornish fisherman and mariner who was born in 1855. He grew up in Penzance with Cornish parents and left school to join the merchant navy and sailed schooners across the North Atlantic. He moved to St. Ives after his marriage and the death of his two infant children with his wife. He worked there as a marine scrap dealer which he sold and brought iron, sails and rope for sailing boats and took up painting in his old age.

Alfred Wallis painting - Newlyn
'Newlyn' by Alfred Wallis

As a result of Wallis wife’s death in 1922 he took up painting ‘for company’ with his main inspiration being 'what used to be out of my memory what we may never see again.’ and his work being painted on materials he could get his hands on for example 'Two Masted Ship' was painted on the back of a G.W.R cheap fare schedule for 1928, 'Two Boats' is painted on the back of a Selfridges box lid with the colour pallete being limited in this manner as well due to the fact that he used the colours he could get his hands on from the ships chandlers.

In 1928 Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood were established artists at the time and came to St. Ives to find a place for their artists colony when they discovered Wallis work on walls which they saw through an open door and then ' Wallis was propelled into a circle of some of the most progressive artists working in Britain in the 1930s. His influence on them is undeniable, although the influence was all one way, and Wallis continued to paint as he always had, with an immediacy and directness that they could never match’. Even though he had a great influence he never considered himself a painter and strayed away from calling himself a member of the art community and colony.

Nowadays, Wallis' paintings are considered fine examples of 'naïve art' and ignores perspective and the scale of the objects is based on its importance.

Alfred Wallis Grave - St Ives
Alfred Wallis Grave

Wallis is buried in the Barnoon graveyard which overlooks the Porthmeor beach and the Tate St Ives. The Tate St. Ives holds a large majority of his painting and his gravestone was made by Bernard Leach and depicts a mariner in front of a large lighthouse.

Edward Hopper

'Hotel Room' 1931

Yellow- happiness
blue- loyalty
brown- reliability
white- pure
grey- sophisticated
orange- creativity
green- nature

The painting uses perspective of colour to contrast the concept of the painting which is showing someone in a state of loneliness with the wide range of bright and contrasting colours which is filled with meaning by having each colour represent a different meaning and semiotics. The yellow wall is a direct comparison to the sadness of the lady because the meaning of yellow is happiness and has connotations to the sun. The blue wall has connotations to depression linking directly to the lady's upset feelings along with the green to connote nature implying that it is natural to feel sad sometimes and lonely. One way the use of colour can be seen is by viewing the colourful clothes and room along with the contents of the room as the outside world which in the woman's view would be happier than she is at that moment while her inside feelings are every cold and negative.

I chose the black briefcase to write a descriptive list of the contents for.

A toothbrush and toothpaste
A cream coloured bowl hat
Passport and travel documents
Shower gel and shampoo

Biography of the lady
This is made-up by me and created to what I think she would be like and who she would be

The lady is called Jane Austin and her full name is Jane James Austin and she married Humphrey Austin but they divorced because Jane proved to court that Humphrey was committing adultery. They had no children together but Humphrey has kids with his new wife. She is 35 years old and works as a nurse where she cares for many sick or injured adults and children which she wanted to do because her mother read stories to her about how nurses look after people in hospital but she did not realise that she would also have to witness people on the brink of death and intense suffering from patients and this affected her in a very negative way but when she first started the job she was unaware that her job would eventually affect her this way and didn't want to quit the job when it got bad because she felt she was letting her mother down as her dream was for her daughter to became a nurse when women were allowed to become nurses. As a student she was very sociable and happy and she worked hard in school as well as balancing social time with friends. She grew up in the UK in Worcester and her father was a policeman and worked long hours and as a child Jane worried a lot for her father when be would come home sometimes with bruises and he would have a cast at times but other than that he cared a lot for his family and was a good father and her mother worked a a factory worker and looked after Jane very well even though her job was mentally taxing. When she was a child she would try her hardest to look after everyone she possibly could leading to her realising that she had a passion for caring for people.

I wrote the letter that she could possible be holding in her hand

To Jane,

I am doing well and the kids and Betty are doing great and we just went to the lakes to feed the ducks and have a walk and we had so much fun talking about our favourite animals. Anyway I would like to know if you would like to join us for dinner at 5.00pm at my home if you are available at that time and I would happily reschedule If you are not available at 5.00pm tomorrow night. We would love it if you decided to come.

From your moved on husband Humphrey,

Identify who is looking at the woman and why

A businessman who is staying at the same hotel is looking for his room and mistakes the lady's room for his room and because the lady forgets to cover the peephole into the room he is able to look through and gather that he has the wrong room but looks for a bit longer because he sees she looks very sad and down and feels the need to help so he knocks on the door meanwhile the woman doesn't notice and continues to read the letter she is reading so he continues finding his room and plans to knock on later to check on her. The relationship between the two is that that they are strangers and the businessman comes across the lady by accident. The lady is being looked upon and the businessman is the looker.

The Lovely Bones (2009) - Movie - YouTube

'The Lovely Bones' is considered a bad adaptation because according to Roger Ebert, in his review of the film, famously described it as "deplorable," with a seriously messed-up message: "If you're a 14-year-old girl who has been brutally raped and murdered by a serial killer, you have a lot to look forward to. You can get together in heaven with the other teenage victims of the same killer, and gaze down in benevolence upon your family members as they mourn you and realize what a wonderful person you were. Sure, you miss your friends, but your fellow fatalities come dancing to greet you in a meadow of wildflowers, and how cool is that?"

Also Scottish director Lynn Ramsey who was removed from the project described the movie as 'The Lovely money' and preferred the darker content to the sugary Heaven scenes and wanted to get away from the more fantastical elements in favour of something more in line with her other films.

Clips

The movie adaptation is considered one of the best as it reflects the themes and context of the book well while making the necessary changes to make it more appropriate for the movie format which are well placed and executed without changing the story and character in a way which would hurt the overall reputation of the movie. The character of Patrick Bateman is very complex and the movie does good job of televising such a complex character and showing all sides and elements of Bateman. The reason this is very clear is by casting Christopher Bale who did a great job of acting out Bateman and he was called 'Robo-Actor' by Mary Harron the director of the movie due his ability to break out a sweat instantly being shown in the business card scene by controlling his own sweat glands consciously take after take.

the movie adaptation was toned down dramatically and one of the singers mentioned in the book Phil Collins said himself that he refused to read the book due tot he fact that multiple pages are used to describe the deaths and the deaths in the book are far more severe than in the adaptation with there being more 50 murders in the book with one being a Childs neck sliced open and 23 murders being accounted for in the adaptation with a nod to more kills by a notepad being exposed during one scene where Bateman lying on a sofa in his office hungover.

Room is considered a good adaptation because the actors Jacob Trembley and Brie Larson did an amazing job as acting out Ma and Jack and they encapsulated the characters in the book really well and was able to show trauma and how the love between Jack and Ma is shown in such a loving way juxtaposing the unpleasantness of them being locked in 'Room' for many years. The adaptation does a good job of showing how even when the victims have escaped the trauma follows them and it can take a while for them to truly be free.

The book was written in Jacks perpective and in the move it features both perspectives of Ma and Jack showing the different perspectives of both characters in terms of Jack only knowing what he is told and believing 'room' is the world and Ma who knows the truth behind her kidnapping. The director Lenny Abrahamson did a good job at showing how jack essentially saved Ma from committing suicide and lightens up her life.

750 word essay-adaptation

The Maze Runner

I will be critically reviewing the book by James Dashner and the movie released in 2014 and the first thing I will mention is how faithful the movie is to the book as there are many similarities with one of these similarities being how the adaptation starts with the mechanical lift and the sounds which are described in the book as ‘Harsh sounds of chains and pulleys’ with this description creating a very uneasy and unsafe atmosphere as we connote chains and pulleys to warehouses which is a place that there are many security measures and hard hats and reflective jackets are worn. The camera heavily focuses on the huge walls in the movie adaptation reflecting the nature of this quote from the book ‘Was it some kind of prison’ being believable by the viewer as it is not yet stated why they are put in this new place and the use of the walls being filmed in a distant manner and the camera doing a 360 degree view to introduce the maze when Tomas first enters the ‘Glade’ showing his point of view and what he is seeing and when he views the walls close up he recovers from his state of shock and confusion and is looking at the scratched names of the inhabitants of the maze in the movie adaptation with the significance of also showing the size of the walls from a close up view. One thing that counters this point that the ‘Glade’ can be viewed as a prison is presented later on in the book and the movie adaptation is how the doors open up giving a false sense of freedom due to the fact that beyond the Glade there are monsters and the shifting maze means that it is easy to get lost in the maze and eventually being consumed by the monsters. This sense of freedom does not last long as it is explained in the book and adaptation that here are monsters beyond the walls of the glade so our sense of freedom is taken away and we are back to feeling confined in the space making us relate to the characters of the story. As well as this the Gladers are all wearing prison-like clothes in the way that the clothes are very basic and grubby and each Gladers clothes are similar enough in style and clothing type. There are many minor differences between the book and the film adaptation with examples being:

Theresa in coma for a few days not a long time or half of movie

W.C.K.D in movie but in book W.I.C.K.E.D

In book Teresa and Tomas can communicate telepathically

Minho is braver during the night he is stuck in the maze with Thomas and Alby in the book.

In the movie, Alby and Thomas get along pretty well.

I chose these as minor differences because they affected the timing of things and not the actual storyline itself and only the timing of thing sin the storyline or they are just small alterations that make the narrative more suitable for a movie format.

Here are some more major differences between the movie and the book

In movie gally doesn’t get flashbacks so doesn’t like change, tries to get Tomas and Teresa banished

A device in the griever helps the team to locate the secret door and the key to their escape in the movie

Thomas starts to remember things from his past life almost immediately in the movie.

In the book, Thomas intentionally gets stung by a Griever.

I chose these as major differences because it affects the storyline itself and has major changes to the plot of the narrative.

I also noticed that in the movie the language was changes to use less Glade slang and more of the language we use everyday which is traditional English and more everyday slang is used in dialogue more understandable and hints of Glade slang ae still used to keep faithfulness to the book. This is a way of attracting a new audience by making it understandable and for the already existing audience of the book Glade slang is used as an inside joke concept to make the fans of the book feel exclusive and more involved which is also done by not changing the movie too much that it feels like it is too different from the book creating the feeling of watching a original concept and not an adaptation.

750 word essay-adaptation

The Maze Runner

I will be critically reviewing The Maze Runner (Dashner, 2009) adaptation and commenting on how faithful the adaptation is to the and the differences and how they affect the adaptation in the long run and how it makes it more suitable for the format it is getting adapted into by making changes to simplify elements to make it work in a visual manner. I will also comment on how the adaptation pleased the already existing audience and new audiences.

The first thing I will mention is how faithful the movie is to the book. There are many similarities in the adaptation, one is how adaptation starts with the mechanical lift and the sounds which are described in the book as ‘Harsh sounds of chains and pulleys’ (James Dashner, 2009: page 1).  This description creates an uneasy and unsafe atmosphere as we connote chains and pulleys to warehouses which are every controlled and managed places but has many dangers and safety precautions which is the headquarters of W.C.K.D can relate to.  The camera heavily focuses on the huge walls in the movie adaptation, which reflects the nature of this quote from the book ‘Was it some kind of prison’ (Dashner,2009,page 8) being believable by the viewer as it is not yet stated why they are put in this new place. The use of the walls filmed in a distant manner and the camera doing a 360 degree view to introduce the maze when Tomas first enters the ‘Glade’ showing his point of view and what he is seeing, when he views the walls close up he recovers from his state of shock and confusion and is looking at the scratched names of the inhabitants of the maze in the movie adaptation with the significance of also showing the size of the walls from a close up view. One thing that counters this point that the ‘Glade’ can be viewed as a prison is presented later on in the book and the movie adaptation is how the doors open up giving a false sense of freedom due to the fact that beyond the Glade there are monsters and the shifting maze means it is easy to get lost in the maze and eventually being consumed by the monsters. This sense of freedom does not last long as it is explained in the book and adaptation that here are monsters beyond the walls of the glade so our sense of freedom is taken away leading us to feel back to feeling confined in the space making us relate to the characters of the story. As well as this the Gladers are all wearing prison-like clothes in the way that the clothes are very basic and grubby and each Gladers clothes are similar in style and clothing type.

In the movie Gally does not get flashbacks so when he attempts to get Tomas and Teresa banished this is the director trying to show us, he just simple does not like change by showing Gally attempt to get the change banished from the maze so it can return to the way it was before Tomas and Teresa came into the maze and brought change. In the book he gets flashback which changes his intentions can somewhat be justified as there is a reason for him acting against the Gladers.

I also noticed that in the movie the language was changed to use less Glade slang and more of the language we use everyday which is traditional English and more everyday slang is used in dialogue more understandable and hints of Glade slang ae still used to keep faithfulness to the book. This is a way of attracting a new audience by making it understandable and for the already existing audience of the book Glade slang is used as an inside joke concept to make the fans of the book feel exclusive and more involved which is done by not changing the movie too much that it feels like it is too different from the book creating the feeling of watching an original concept and not an adaptation.

In summary I feel the movie adaptation (The Maze Runner, Wes Ball, 2014) did a great job of encapsulating the book (The Maze Runner, James Dashner, 2009) in a visual manner and making the necessary changes to make it more accessible keeping it in line with the book in the process so the old fans will not feel disconnected from the adaptation.

Statement of intent

I am going to create a 'La Jatee' (1962) style series of photographs which will be edited in photoshop with all photos being edited in a similar way so when the  photos are compiled they do not clash and the photos do not feel out of place when they are being shown. I will also include a voiceover over the photographs narrating the story I have chosen to create for the piece which could possible feature more than one person narrating parts of the story if it is appropriate and I feel it is needed. The story will be about a lady who robs banks with her crew and while her crew are all men she uses a disguise of a man to slip away unnoticed with the money while her crew distracts the police and authorities away from her  but she gets note saying that her crewmates have run off with all the money and after deciding what to do and feeling betrayed she seeks revenge and the money on her own.

The reason I have chosen this approach is because it is a very different method of creating media and combines both photography and script-writing and is seems that the short film has been very influential on newer tiles such as 'back to the future' and 'terminator' which are very successful and I can practice two types of media practice at the same time by using both to create one piece. As well as this is a unique media to tell a narrative and adapt a painting into.

The appeal to 16-18 comes from the action movie plot which includes 16-18 year olds in their target audience and action movies typically include themes that are suitable for 16-18 such as violence, blood and weapons which is the case because they reach the age where these themes do not affect them in a negative way and make them cringe and squirm but they have learnt to get enjoyment and not be bothered by these themes instead. It will appeal also because the main lead is a female showing empowerment so female viewers would want to watch the short film to feel empowering and strong and male viewers would want to watch the film due to the male gaze presented in the theory developed and created by Laura Mulvey and to also watch a film that stereotypically matches their interests because we are talking stereotypically for this point action movies convey masculine themes which is disrupted by the main protagonist being a female so there is something different and something making this short film differ from most action media examples excluding other action media that does this.

I am going to have to take in consideration how I am going to reference the original painting by Edward Hopper as the story moves on very quickly and it would be easy to forget that it is an adaptation of that specific painting which is 'Hotel Room' 1931 I would need to remind the audience of this by keeping the main focus on the woman and her journey to getting justice to her crewmates who have taken revenge on her as the painting has a heavy focus on the woman and the room and I want to keep that focus on the woman throughout the short film. I will also have to keep in consideration the style and aesthetic so I can use a similar style and aesthetic without copying directly as a painting look is not going to look good as a visual piece for the reason they are every contrasting media pieces.

I put all of my ideas for the story in a mind map and put down my ideas and if I thought the idea would fir the format underneath and I decided to go with the idea of the lady being given a ransom note to free her husband because some of my other concepts I thought of would need too much explaining through photos and I would have to make my piece too long and additionally I feel this concept really stood out to me due to the fact that it has heavy action movie theme and uses different styles of photography I would like to use leading to an opportunity to experiment with different styles of photography.

Artists inspired by Edward hopper

Gregory Crewdson

It is very clear that Gregory Crewdson is inspired by Edward Hopper because his work is very similar visually and the meaning behind his work is the same as Hopper work as shown in his work by presenting loneliness and isolation but instead of painting his work is more modern and he uses photography to photograph his work. His other influence is Diane Arbus    after being dragged to a Diane Arbus Exhibition at MoMA when he was 10 by his dad.

Diane Arbus

Diane Arbus work displays people who are considered social outcasts and don't take the traditional route and displayed people that were considered 'normal' in a way that their social masks start to crack. This picture of two twins called 'Identical Twins, Roselle, New Jersey, 1967' is a very clear inspiration for the twins in 'The Shining' 1980 which will be shown in a picture below.

Richard Diebenkorn

Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993) created very geometric and abstract paintings as shown below.

Not only does Richard use shapes and blocks of colour in his painting but he also paints scenery in the same geometric style of art which  contains lots of squares and rectangles and when edges are curved they are curved with very sharp corners and edges. I am personally very interested in this style of painting and how Richard paints the painting is very appealing to the eye and aesthetically pleasing as it makes sense in the mind with use of complimentary colours and irregular shapes. Hi work will influence how I use colours and the colour palettes I use in my photographs and what colours I will photograph as well as how I will photograph shapes.

Robert Guinan

Roberts work has the main focus of loneliness in populated areas as shown by the examples and the other paintings he has produced. One thing I noticed about the work after studying the paintings for a while is the fact that all the paintings have very low saturation while having a very big colour pallete and range of colours to show the bleakness and dullness of loneliness while having the colours to represent the surrounding.

Kidnap (Luis Prieto,2017)

This movie features Halle Berry playing the main character of a single mother (Karla Dyson) who looks after her son Frankie McCoy (Sage Correa) and takes him to a park when he goes missing while she is on the phone and she sees in the distance her son being stuffed into a car and the movie essentially follows Karla on a journey to rescue her son from his kidnappers. I took inspiration for the main story line from this film because when I was coming up with ideas and mind mapping them I attached an already existing media ranging from books to podcasts that follow the storyline the closest so if I was stuck and wanted a template to follow I could have that to use when necessary. I will only be following the storyline at the beginning of the movie because I have my own ideas on how the story should go after the point where she gets the ransom and after this point in the movie the storyline does not match at all what I have planned out. Although the movie is considered a bad movie it does not matter because I will simple be using it as a basic template to elevate my ideas.

The Sixth Sense (M.Night Shyamalan, 1999)

The Sixth Sense by M. Night Shyamalan is a movie about a child who can see dead people. People think that is his sixth sense when really the 6th sense is actually

I chose to use this film because I was inspired by the twist in the film and decided to try and implement it into my own piece because it is an twist which can be utilised to its full potential by leaving hints throughout the short film that are every subtle and will take a observant eye to notice and piece together the twist early. The reason this is something I wanted to implement because it makes a piece rewatchable because when the viewer discovers the twist in the first watch the suggestion that hey should rewatch the piece in a new perspective and try and spot the clues. Having a twist that is effective also adds an extra  element of surprise with tithe side effect of keeping the attention of the viewer by adding new content which requires attention from the viewer otherwise they will miss the information and the attention is grabbed by building suspense and putting questions in the viewers mind which end up being answered by the twist being revealed.

The twist in this movie is that Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) was dead the whole time.

Other twists in M. night Shyamalan movies:

The Visit (2015)- The 'grandparents' are actually not their grandparents and escaped patients at a psychiatric hospital.

The Village (2004)- The titular community is actually living in modern day and not in the 19th century.

The Happening (2008)- the trees emit gas that cause humans to harm themselves.

Lady In The Water (2006)- The wolf like creature is a result of an escaped creature from the fantasy world created by the author (M. Night Shyamalan)

Signs (2002)- The aliens have a weakness which is water.

Out of all the movies by M. Night Shyamalan my favourite twist is the one in 'The Sixth Sense' (M. Night Shyamalan, 1999) as it makes the most sense and is the best concept for a twist as well as being the first catching viewers off guard and his other movies predictable as the viewers know that there is a twist and are looking very closely and to support this he continued to use twists in most of his movies and it was very predictable that there was going to be a twist except from 'Signs' (M. Night Shyamalan) which it is argued that it is not even a twist. in my personal opinion I think the concept of twists was overdone in his movies and because of this there are some very bad twists due to the fact that there are a limited amount of twist stat you can put into a film that matches the context of the film.

WandaVision (Matt Shakman, 2021)

Phycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960)

The Lighthouse (Robert Eggers, 2019)

These are examples of black and white films and tv shows which convinced me to shoot my photos in black and white. I chose to look at modern examples that use the black and white format along with older examples taking into account the fact that I want to modernize the painting and put my own spin on it so that it is modernized with some of he old fashioned elements such as the note with the ransom amount on to keep some times the same to the painting and to exaggerate the fact that the 'kidnappers' want to stay lowkey and hidden from any other enemies except the main character by not using digital transactions that cane tracked but then raises the issue of the protagonist altering the authorities which will fix by having the protagonist being threatened in case she alerts authorities. The black and white format also exaggerates the stealthy and hidden nature of the purpose of the protagonist and how the villains want to stay hidden and the very bland colour scheme of black and white reflects the simple goal of the 'kidnappers' which is to get their £100,000.

These were the answers for the first question:

Meridith

Jade

Sandra

April

Anderson (second name)

Regina (Gina for short)

These were the answers to the second question

A female realises that they don't need male validation

When she goes through a great amount of pain and suffering emotionally and physically and rises above

She uses her vulnerability and learns to embrace it and use it as a strength

Stand up for yourself

Don't take everything personally

These were the answers for the third question

Housewife

Work from home

The answers for this questions were simple as these two answers as everyone agreed that this was the most suitable job for her to have in the beginning

I decided to pick the second name as Anderson because in Greek it has the meaning of man or manly and throughout the POC she lowly becomes 'manly' and tougher and takes on behavioural instincts which are considered 'masculine' by the stereotype provided by the words man, manly and masculine.

I also chose the name Regina (Gina for short) because and has the meaning of Queen and is a latin word which connotes power and control over other people and the authority to make decisions for themselves and other people reflecting the powerful person Gina goes through. I also thought about having har names Gina at the start because it is easier to say so people are putting less effort in to introduce her and say her name suggesting they do not want spent long mentioning her and in a way does not have any meaning as it is a shortened version of a name with the meaning and when she is going her journey of building up mental strength and she reaches a point where she feels strong enough she will tell people to call her Regina.

I decided to focus on just the female classmates responses for this question because they have been through many hardships and as a male I was not fully educated on how females grow a strong mindset due to the fact that females can go through problems and obstacles that males don't experience so that is why I think this group discussion was necessary .

I widened my range on the boys and girls on the this question so I could get every persons perspective and thought on what career the protagonist would have and this question had the same answer from everybody but they worded differently and I myself found myself gravitating towards this answer so it would make sense to choose this option as many people collectively had the same answer as it is the option that makes the most sense.

I created a Pinterest board with many black and white photos and there were many examples that gave me new ideas on how I could take some of my photos

I used Pinterest because there are so many creators and there is so much content on there for inspiration and I decided that if I look at a wide range of examples i can be more open-minded to the shots that I use when I take my photographs.

Along with this I drew some of my own shots that I could visualise in my mind and drew them out so I could see what they will look like if I was to use these formats in my photographs

I decided to shoot my photos in black and white because I wanted to shoot the first few photos in black and white because I felt like if I shot in in colour it would be a generic choice as most modern visual media pieces are shot in colour and as I am modernising the piece I am also keeping some elements old-fashioned with the main thing being old fashioned is the pieces involved in the transaction of the money in exchange for her husband for the reason I have stated earlier that the 'kidnappers' want to ensure that the exchange is lowkey and contain a hidden characteristic about the 'kidnappers'' that they are every old-fashioned that can be recognised if the viewer looks into the details and connotations. another reason I decided to shoot in black and white is to juxtapose the modern clothes and surrounding with the old fashioned colours and gives me an opportunity to try shooting in black and white and try out way I can use lighting to create dramatic effect in black and white. Also i personally have never seen this juxtaposition been done before to my knowledge and that is why the viewer will be more interested because it is such a new concept. One thing I will also do is include some timeless fashion such as trench coats, plain shirts and jeans etc to act as a bridge for the juxtaposition to feel natural and to crate a connection between the old-fashioned black and white and the modern buildings and the modern clothing used in the POC.

La Jatee

Treatment

I decided to use a concept of a woman getting a ransom note with a number of money required to free her husband which is £100,000 and I got the main inspiration from the movie (Kidnap, Luis Prieto, 2017) where the story follows a mother who is on a mission to get her kidnapped son back from kidnappers and with my side influence being The Sixth Sense (M.Night Shyamalan, 1999) for the twist. I feel Kidnap (Luis Prieto, 2017) was a good option for storyline inspiration because it is a very simple plot which can be changed in major and minor ways without affecting the whole story and a simpler storyline means that you can branch out to new concepts very easily. As well as this the casting is very limited meaning that I can spend more time building a connection between the viewer and the character which is appropriate in this situation because they protagonist will end up being betrayed by her husband. I chose The Sixth Sense (M. Night Shyamalan, 1999) as an influence on the twist ending but in this case I will be using the twist ending of the protagonist being betrayed by her husband. I decided to try and implement it into my own piece because it is an twist which can be utilized to its full potential by leaving hints throughout the short film that are every subtle and will take a observant eye to notice and piece together the twist early.

The protagonist in the POC starts off as very happy and relying on her husband  and throughout we see the change into an independent and strong female role model who is very tough and uses the hardships to develop 'thick skin'. She will be facing her problems alone and will not have the mental strength to tell the authorities and get help as she fears that anyone would not believe her and authorities will not find evidence to back her accusation. This is one of the hurdles she has to face to become tougher mentally. When the protagonist gains mental strength then she will gain the confidence to become physically strong.

I want the piece to reflect the Batman series as I feel that there is a good mix of dark and colourful colour palette with the Batman movies and comics mainly showing batman fighting enemies at nighttime with the reason that he is trying to stay hidden and fight crime discreetly supported by the batman suit being black meanwhile the Joker is the opposite and wants to be noticed with his clothing being very colourful and his attacks and intentions being executed in a way that he want peoples attention.

I want my target audience to be very wide and I want the piece to appeal to a very mainstream audience with the target audience in mind of 16-18 with no specific social class and ethnicity I want to target as the photographs would correlate with the mainstream audience and not be restricted to any race, ethnicity and social class. I will appeal to the target audience by using elements of action, thriller and adventure movies which are genres that include this age group into their target audience and combining elements will ensure that the mainstream audience enjoy the photos as it includes multiple genres to appeal to a wider range of interests. The photos will attract all genders because it has a female lead who goes on a journey to discover her inner strength and the main genre that is presented through the photos is male based genre in stereotypical terms from a traditional perspective but in modern day both genders would be interested as females are tougher and society is working on breaking the gender barriers so whatever perspective a member of the audience have, the photos will appeal to them.

After some consideration I realized that I would not have enough time to do a piece in the 'La Jetee' (Chris Marker, 1962) style as I would need to create a script for the dialogue and and as well as edit the photos I would need to edit it once I have finished doing the editing and it would be easier to just do 8 photos which would require a significant less pre-production and would mean that I would I would only need to take the photos and edit the photos as the deadline from the date now (3rd February) would be next Friday. Along with this the planning I have done already still fits the changes to the POC and is to irrelevant as well as these changes giving me more opportunities to play around with lighting and photography and experimenting in these specific areas meaning that in the future I will be better at these skills elevating my future work.

I will need to take sure that when I am making my adaptation I am careful to not stray away from the original work and make sure there is a balance between how much the original is referenced and used for inspiration to any original ideas I use and any new concepts I decide to include so it feels like an adaptation but it introduces new themes and additions. Some adaptations most commonly in books to film make very minor changes and are very similar to the book meanwhile some adaptations decide to do make more major changes and make new additions and I want to go down the route where I add additions and major changes but I don't want to go as far as making a whole new narrative and concept. I will also credit other creators when necessary for example when their work is referenced or included and I will need to make sure the subject is comfortable with being photographed and being tied to a chair with duct tape on their mouth for a short while and I will every way to minimise harm and danger to the subject. I will also get consent from all my subjects to be photographed and used in my photos for grading and reviewing purposes and media creation purposes.

Lighting

Natural light

Natural light is essentially lighting provided by the sun in most cases but natural lighting can also be electricity, stars and fire. Bioluminescence also counts as natural lighting. Natural lighting allows all light to be evenly spread across all the contents in the shot and created depth by lighting up subjects naturally.

 Examples

Bloody Sunday (Paul Greengrass, 2002)

The Witch (Robert Eggers, 2015)

The Last Of The Mohicans (Michael Mann, 1992)

These movies are shot entirely using natural light and it works in these cases because they are set in older times where the only source of light would have been natural light from the sunlight but also from fire in the surrounding and when they use fire to create a lighting source in dark caves and dark confined spaces in the form of lamps. Additionally these films are set mainly outdoors so the natural lighting makes sense to the viewer as the sun would be creating the light in the daytime naturally and adding artificial light would lose the believability because the artificial light would clash with the natural light.

Backlight

Examples

Backlight is used to add depth and dramatic effect to an shot or photograph and emphasises the placement in a shot or photograph along with creating the silhouettes. The effects of backlighting can make the shot or photograph more dramatic  and when used in another way it can cause overexposure and deep shadows.

Soft and Hard Lighting

Hard Lighting

Examples

Hard light is used to create every distinct and harsh and deep shadows adding contrast to a shot and draws your attention to the actor as the light is directly on them and creates an intense feeling for the viewer by creating a very captivating atmosphere. Additionally, the transition between the light and dark is heavily defined. One downfall to hard light is that skin imperfections are made more clear with hard lighting.

Soft Lighting

Examples

Soft lighting can be achieved by balancing the lights using mirrors and bouncing boards etc. Soft lighting has no shadows and creates a feel-good, warm, glowy and uplifting feeling for the viewer. This lighting is very flattening and unlike hard lighting soft lighting helps smooth wrinkles, hide acne and bring out light in someone’s eyes meaning that there is less retouching to do. That is why this lighting type is used in portraits, fashion photography, travel photography and food photography.

Rembrandt lighting

I planned my last two shots with two inspirations in mind, Scream (Wes Craven, 1996) and Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960). I chose inspiration from the of Scream (Wes Craven, 1996) by looking at the killer reveals and how the survivors are always in shock as the killers are always people that the protagonist Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has direct contact with and may have considered a friend and this applies to Sidney only as she always survives the killings and is the consistent survivor in the series. The situation in these cases are very similar to the situation Regina is put in as her husband is someone she has close contact with and loves.

I decided to research the mask as I had an idea of having the husband reveal himself in a mask of some sort and shocking Regina but i felt that is would not be appropriate because it would mean I would have to add a layer of justification for the mask and it would be very unnecessary and would make the twist less of a shock as the viewer gets more time to figure out the twist and the only person who could be wearing the mask would be her husband and there is an argument that it is not expected as he is absent right until the end but there is a counterargument that the ending when she gives the ransom money and is the one in control of her husbands future that is when the husband is expected to be shown in the piece so I felt that it would be more appropriate to use the ending from Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1996) as it would need less setup and would be more appropriate for the setting and situation.

I drew out the last shots I will take for my photos and they show the husband with his arms up showing he could have easily untied himself and this photo is one step towards the set-up of the reveal as even though he could have easily untied himself it does not specifically state that he was the mastermind behind the whole plot. The next shot shows himself doing an evil smirk as he has won and got the money and the fact that the crew members do not interfere confirm that he is the mastermind for the whole fake kidnapping. This is a direct reference to Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960) as it is not very clear in the drawing but it is very similar and almost a copy of this final shot from the film.

I made the choice to make the ending very clear as in both Scream (Wes Craven, 1996) and Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960) use very clear ending and as I am using a twist like these inspiration it would make sense to follow how the better twists are done in cinema and how they are made so clear with preparation. In my case the film does not build up like these examples but I can use this to my advantage as the narrative for my photos seems like narrative photography that would not include a twist as it appears like a traditional action narrative that would end with the protagonist achieving their goal.

This page had the most crosses because when I tested out the camera before shooting I would take a random picture of my surroundings at the time and this explains the first 7 photographs. Also I took some photographs in the alley at night and found that as it was dark it was very difficult to light the subject and the surroundings as well as the space in font of the subject. I made the mistake of not using the lighting equipment and I feel strongly that I could have taken the alley photos at night with the lighting equipment. Also I did not use the lighting equipment as I shot this next to busy shops so there was a higher risk of someone bumping into the equipment and damaging it as well as the equipment being stolen. Additionally wanted lighting from the streetlight but I found that the streetlight ski don't light the area that I was shooting in at the time.

The Red Cross means that I do not like the photograph and it do not want to use for many reasons from it being too dark to the positioning not fitting the context.

The green border around the photograph means that I really like the photo and there is a very high chance that I will use these photos but not certainly as I might see another photo that I would rather use that does not have agree border around it.

Practice edit 1

I added the black and white filter in the adjustments tab.

These are the default levels that photoshop assigns the photograph before I used custom levels.

These are the other options I can pick from

The differences between the presents are very minor and because there is no colour to change and adjust the differences are the shades of black and white. The way I saw the differences between all these presents are by looking at the headscarf the subject is wearing as there are colours on the scarf as it is tartan and the colours contrast each other and have a strong colour scheme of red and black and white which makes the different shades of black and white contrast with the filter applied and the different saturation between the red and black and white stripes makes the differences clear between the colour levels and shade of black and white.

I found with my custom levels the clouds in the sky look very dark and gloomy as well as looking more distinguished compared to when I put the cyan level as when the cyan levels are high the clouds disappear and the sky looks very clear which is not the feel I wanted to go. The sky being so gloomy means that the trees and plants look even more dead, this is a good thing because the plants and trees stand for hope and growth and eliminating this connotation disregards any hope left supported by the fair graffiti which actually says unfair but the photograph has been curt of so all that shows is 'fair' creating the idea that everything that is happening to the subject is fair which as the audience we know isn't so the juxtaposition between the fact that we are aware that this is not fair and the graffiti stating that it is creates sympathy in the viewer for the subject.

the saturation and hue had no effect on the edit so I didn't not use those levels but the lightness allowed me to very slightly tone down the lightness which I think was a bad choice because now it it too bland and dark so if this was one of my edits I would not turn the lightness down as it loses interest due to the lack of bright colours but created the depressing feel that ls hope is lost so it works in that sense. I would make it a tiny bit lighter so it is not as dark but I would still turn the lightness down to -5 instead of -9.

Evaluation

1.          What skills did you hope to develop at the beginning of the assignment? To what extent have you achieved this?

I hoped to develop a skill in narrative photography and learn how to tell a story using photographs and I have achieved this by creating narrative photography myself and learning the best ways to photograph subjects and props and order the photos to show the story in the most clear way as well as what angles to use to show the most necessary content. I also hoped to enhance my skills in macro photography as I have not experimented with macro photography at all and I would like to gain the skill to effectively use macro photography as in situations it can be really useful and send the message I am trying to tell when it is the perfect way of doing it. Also macro photography really interests me as it is a cool way of photographing small objects that would not be the main focus when using other photography styles and it can be used on all sizes of objects and subjects. I particularly like how droplets of water look when macro photography is used and the how the droplets have a very discreet reflection and shine highlighting the main object photographed.

2.          How did you develop your product following peer feedback of your draft work?

I developed my work by researching topics and inspirations that would elevate my final pieces and introduce new useful ideas and contents that I could include that would make the photos better. I was also told through feedback that researching more black and white sources would give a better idea of how black and white media is edited to change the brightness levels and lighting sources and where the lighting sources are places and where it is shot to line up with other lighting sources. I was also told that using different lighting types would help light the subject in a more appropriate manner for the context.

3.          What problems did you face when completing your adaptation? How did you resolve these?

I faced many issues during my adaptation completion and my process for finding the bast solution would consist of me listing down all the solutions and deciding which the best option would be in terms of the best outcome and how efficient the solution is. A problem I faced was not having enough time to compile my photos in style of La Jetee (Chris Marker, 1962) so I decided to just present my photos as just individual photos with the narrative being shown through these photos as my research would all still apply with this change and having my research on La Jetee (Chris Marker,1962) would show that I was researching different formats for my photos in detail. I was also very unsure on what to call the subject and the husband in the story so what I did was I asked my classmates 3 questions and what they would name the characters and decided on the name through these answers and researching of meanings of the names so they would match with the characteristics and personality of the characters until I came up with the names eventually.

4.          Give examples of how you have worked independently and professionally during the project.

I worked independently when setting up the lighting for the photos and positioning the light source to shine the light at a certain brightness setting and position and when I wasn’t the subject, I used responsibility to position the camera at many angles and take them at different distances away from close-up and even macro to long shots. When shooting in public I also took responsibility to look after the equipment and keep it safe and to make sure people around the area I was shooting was aware what was going o by explaining to them what I was doing as well as ensuring the subject is safe especially when shooting at night. When doing outdoor shoots I was very aware of timing and professionally took the photos at the instructed time to get the perfect sky and natural lighting from artificial sources and natural sources. I also did all my research independently and was professional enough to ask for help with peer focus groups to discuss things I was unsure of or wanted multiple perspectives for better understanding and clearer choices and answers.

5.          Discuss the feedback from your target audience. What did they like about the product? What could have been improved?

The feedback I got from my target audience was mainly positive and that they really liked the piece and they all said that the piece was well edited as there was no comments on the editing of the photo but there was two comments on the centring of the photo which I think is a good comment but the second comment refers to a photograph that is did not centre on purpose as I wanted to how the scuffs and marks on the wall. Everyone understood the story very well except the person who said they did not understand the story and only knew what was happening as I told everyone the narrative beforehand and as this was only one person I think that this was a case of someone needing a little more time to process the photos. One comment that came up quite frequently is that there could have been more photos to make the story more clear and I agree and the reason I chose to use only 8 photographs is so I could put lots of focus into those 8 photos and make them the best as possible and there does not always need to be lots of photos in narrative photography but next time I will take this on board and use more photos but not to an extent that there is too much photographs as I want to make sure I have enough photos to make sure I can perfect. The audience felt that they had an emotional connection with the main character and felt what she was feeling and the emotions they mentioned were the ones I intended for them to feel. They all also felt that the photos resonated with the target audience and some were unsure and said they could see the appeal but I got no comments saying that they think it did not appeal to the target audience.

6.          To what extent have you produced a creative adaptation that would appeal to 16-18 year olds?

I have created an adaptation that appeals to the target audience because it involves topics that are very sensitive, and the kidnapping topic is a very dangerous thing that happens in real life and may be disturbing for younger viewers and the age group is at the age where they feel comfortable talking about the topic and viewing content regarding the topic and being shown the danger connected to kidnapping. Another topic in the photos is loneliness and this is very clear through the fact that she is fighting the problems all on her own and this resonates to the target audience because loneliness is a very common feeling for the target audience due to social media which in theory should make people feel less lonely but in fact it is a proven point that social media makes people feel more disconnected and lonelier than connected. The fact that the subject is fighting this huge hurdle all on her own would put some serious stress on her and this would lead to her mental health being affected and as this age group experience bad mental health and mental heath problems very commonly this is something that they can relate to the subject and will gain an emotional connection to the subject as a result.

7.          How would you like to develop your skills for the Final Major Project?

I would like to develop my skills in other areas of media as I feel I have focuses on photography very heavily and I would like to explore more areas in media that I may actually enjoy that I did not expect to and to expand my expertise in many areas of media so I can switch between different forms of media when required and gain more understanding of one form of media through other forms of media. I would also like to develop my written skills by incorporating it into a visual type of media I  v=will ick as I feel I would do better in visual forms of media backed up with experience and practice from previous projects as I feel I could get better at the written side of media and improve from y past written project. I would also like to develop my acting skills which I will do through secondary help so when I am asked to model or act in someone else’s piece or my own piece I can do that very well and effectively give them and myself the best possible results I can create through these developed skills.

The Maze Runner

I will be critically reviewing Dashner, J (2009) The Maze Runner, Delacorte Press: New York City adaptation and commenting on how faithful the adaptation is to the and the differences and how they affect the adaptation in the long run and how it makes it more suitable for the format it is getting adapted into by making changes to simplify elements to make it work in a visual manner. I will also comment on how the adaptation pleased the already existing audience and new audiences.

The first thing I will mention is how faithful the movie is to the book. There are many similarities in the adaptation, one is how adaptation starts with the mechanical lift and the sounds which are described in the book as ‘Harsh sounds of chains and pulleys’ (Dashner, 2009:1).  This description creates an uneasy and unsafe atmosphere as we connote chains and pulleys to warehouses which are every controlled and managed places but has many dangers and safety precautions which is the headquarters of W.C.K.D can relate to.  The camera heavily focuses on the huge walls in the movie adaptation, which reflects the nature of this quote from the book ‘Was it some kind of prison’ (Dashner, 2009:8) being believable by the viewer as it is not yet stated why they are put in this new place.

In summary I feel the movie adaptation The Maze Runner (2014) Directed by Wes Ball [Film] Twentieth century Fox did a great job of encapsulating the book Dashner, J (2009) The Maze runner, Delacorte Press: New York City in a visual manner and making the necessary changes to make it more accessible keeping it in line with the book in the process so the old fans will not feel disconnected from the adaptation.

Be Aware. P/D & PROD Co-ORD to carry out their own risk assessments on arrival at locations each day  for anything that is not specifically covered in this RA. If concerned about any aspect of health & safety, or risk assessment to call the Head of Production at any time. All of the team on location should feel able to intervene if they are not comfortable with something & always refer back to the SP/PD/PM if in doubt. Meeting will be held to discuss Health & Safety with the contributors & production team in advance of any filming and discuss what will happen/be procedure in case of fire/accident emergencies.

Production information:

·       Dates

·        Times

·        Brief description of the general content of production

·        equipment required

·       any additional requirements for production

·        any issue which may affect production in this location

4.2.22

Whenever the subject is available to shoot

I will be taking photographs of 3 different shots with the first being my model sitting on a bed holding a note that says £100,000 and the second one being a shot of a suitcase and the third one will be me tied to a chair.

I will need the lighting equipment and a camera and some props.

When in this location I will need to make sure that corridor lighting and lighting from windows does not rui the dramatic lighting.

Sound information:

·       Issues or potential problems (such as nearby unwanted noise)

·        sound test results

·       Additional/specific sound equipment required

There will be no problems regarding sound as I am doing photography.

Power information:

·       how you will  supply power for equipment at this location?

I will use plugs and extension cords as well as portable batteries

Access:

·       Permission granted

·       Booking confirmed

·       Public /private place

·       Issues which may affect access for production team or cast

·       How you will deal with potential issues

The rooms are very open and there will be no problem getting access and they are very private places to take photos.

Possible hazards:

·       What are the potential problems? particularly considering weather if outdoor?

·       how you will avoid or respond to them?

I will make sure that the lighting equipment is not placed in a vulnerable position and place it in an area in which it will not fall over.

I will make sure that extension cords are tucked against the walls and corners to avoid tripping over.

I believe to the best of my knowledge that this location is suitable for this production.

·        any issue which may affect production in this location

4.2.22

Whenever the model is free

I will shoot the model walking down an alleyway and walking down a street

I will only need a camera for these shots

I will need to take the photographs at a time where there are not many people around

If it is raining I will need to take the photos another time

Sound information:

·       Issues or potential problems (such as nearby unwanted noise)

·        sound test results

·       Additional/specific sound equipment required

Sound will not be a problem as I doing photography

Power information:

·       how you will  supply power for equipment at this location?

I will not need power in this location as I will make sure my camera is fully charged.

Access:

·       Permission granted

·       Booking confirmed

·       Public /private place

·       Issues which may affect access for production team or cast

·       How you will deal with potential issues

The space is very open and I will not need permissions to access this location. This location is very open and there will be many people there and to tackle this I will take my photos when it is not busy.

Possible hazards:

·       What are the potential problems? particularly considering weather if outdoor?

·       how you will avoid or respond to them?

There could be sharp objects on the floor in the alleyway and when shooting at night there are many dangers of shotting in an alley in the dark and to tackle these, I will check the area that the model will be standing for any sharp and harmful objects as well as shooting in the day to avoid the dangers of taking photos in the night. I will also make sure to check the weather forecast before going to the location to avoid the camera lens ans system getting damaged by rain.

I believe to the best of my knowledge that this location is suitable for this production.
